Is this weird? Buying Perfume

MrsDrakeRamoray · 14/02/2024 16:05

Posting here for traffic. I was fortunate enough to go on my first cruise holiday when I was 13, which was straight after Christmas. That year, I had got a perfume from my parents - Ghost (The first one) - and I took it on that cruise and every time I smell it, it reminds me of that holiday which was amazing. My next cruise holiday was around 9 years after that, and I wore the original Jimmy Choo perfume and I also bought a bottle of Ghost for the trip too.

Since then, I have went on a number of cruises and always bought and taken the same 2 perfumes as they remind me of the great holidays I've had onboard. Today, I had the same perfumes delivered and my DH thinks its weird that I do that and to try something else?

I do wear other perfumes when not on holiday, but it's only these 2 that I wear when away.

I don't get how that makes me weird! Am I? Does anyone else do this?

I think it’s nice that you’ve attached such happy memories to that perfume. When you’re feeling down, try spraying some and see if it’ll lift your mood.

I digress…but no deffo not weird. Continue the tradition I say

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 14/02/2024 16:10

Sounds perfectly fine to me!

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 14/02/2024 16:10

Absolutely normal, and lovely.
I have over 200 perfumes, I'm a collector.
I always take Eau d'Hadrien on holiday.

Loubelle70 · 14/02/2024 16:13

I like original ghost.
I have ALOT perfumes..i add to collection and always duplicate over time. Atm im wearing l'interdit rouge utime..my new favourite...

suntannedsnowballs · 14/02/2024 16:13

Was it Ghost in the pink moon bottle?

Whatevs23 · 14/02/2024 16:14

I have one particular perfume that I love and have worn nothing but that for years. I don't think that's unusual. But there's also nothing wrong with trying different perfumes, and I don't see any issue with having certain perfumes for certain situations, even if that's not what I do. Smell is incredibly evocative after all.

Having said that, I don't wear perfume every day and I tend not to take perfume with me on holidays or cruises when I'm trying to keep luggage as small and light as possible!

I love that one,Orb of Night.

TheDandyLion · 14/02/2024 16:15

Totally normal. In fact the orginal Ghost reminds me of my holiday to New York around 25 years ago and every few years I get a small bottle and it reminds me of that holiday every single time.

honeyfox · 14/02/2024 16:20

Not so unusual I think. I have a habit of wearing Hypnotic Poison around Christmas and for nights out in the winter. When i smell it i think of all those times and it makes me happy. I do have other perfumes.

cauliflowerqueen · 14/02/2024 16:20

I don't use perfume often, but that sounds like smart thinking to me. Scents do bring back memories so powerfully! I would consider trying to make new positive associations with other scents, so you have a broader range to use as a mood booster when you're having a hard time or just want to feel that warm rush of happy memories. However, if you're happy sticking to those two, why not? Unless your husband doesn't like those specific perfumes, I don't see why he should care one way or the other.

MrsDrakeRamoray · 15/02/2024 10:43

Thanks all! Good to know I'm not weird haha!

YANBU. However you are very brave to admit to going on cruises on here. Mumsnet hates them.

FindingMeno · 15/02/2024 10:59

I always link different perfumes to different things.

GreyCarpet · 15/02/2024 11:03

Smell is one of the most powerful triggers of our memories.

I think it's a perfectly understandable thing to do. And quite sweet really

cliffdiver · 15/02/2024 11:05

Not weird at all.

I always buy a new perfume in duty free to remind me of that particular holiday.

DH has now started doing this too.

Meagainnewname · 15/02/2024 11:09

I don’t buy specific perfumes for a holiday, I just take what’s nearly empty and throw it away instead of bringing it home
saying that though, I don’t like wearing perfumes abroad I feel it smells different and it makes me have a rash which I put it down to the heat making me react to it

I thought that and yes I'm a cruise loather!

MissBattleaxe · 15/02/2024 11:11

You can wear any perfume you want for any reason you want. What you're doing sounds lovely.

Laiste · 15/02/2024 11:13

Not unusual i would have thought.

I grabbed a big bottle of Jlo Glow air-side on the way to 2 fantastic weeks in Egypt. Now when ever i smell it i think of the sun and the mountains in the desert and the diving and being warm and tanned and everything being in the UK ISN'T! And in my head i'm back there! 😩😂

Other perfumes come and go but i always have a bottle of Jlo and i love to wear it when we do get a bit of heat here.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/02/2024 11:14

Seems perfectly normal to me - smells are very evocative, and these perfumes are part of your cruise experience, like the smell of a pine needles at Christmas or sun cream on a beach.

noooooooo · 15/02/2024 11:16

I get really turned off by negative associations. Thierry Mugler’s Angel is heartbreak, Chanel Chance is post-natal depression. Burberry Touch is the worst job I ever had and Obsession is being sexually harassed!

on the plus, YSL Baby Doll is youth, Mandarino di Amalfi is recognition, Penhaligon’s Halfeti is Christmas. It’s really nice to associate smells so positively and reserve them for your cruises. I wish I could still wear Obsession!

Laiste · 15/02/2024 11:24

@noooooooo

Batiste dry shampoo is horrendous morning sickness Envy

ioflower · 15/02/2024 11:57

It's not so weird. I own a lot of perfume (50 - 100 bottles Blush) but I have some perfumes I wear for certain things/places/times and only that.

Then, if I have somewhere I need to go or something to do that is negative or potentially stressful, I wear one of the perfumes from the positively associated places rather than a more random scent. Partly because I don't want one of my occasional perfumes connected to something negative.

Actually reading back I'm thinking that possibly does sound weird 🤔

skilpadde · 15/02/2024 12:01

Not strange at all. When I go on holiday, I like to buy a new-to-me range of shower gel, body lotion, body spray or perfume and use it constantly on that holiday.

That smell then always reminds me of that holiday, so long as I don't use overuse it too much on gloomy, wet Mondays that might dilute the effect / olfactory memory.
