To hand my notice in while on sick..?

I've been suffering with severe headaches and other symptoms. I'm having an MRI.

I've got a sick note as there is no way I could work. I think the job could be contributing to these issues (unless of course the MRI shows anything) as it's quite stressful.

I've been wanting to leave and hand my notice in anyway. Is it unreasonable to email my notice in and "work my notice" while on sick? So in theory not go back.

It unreasonable at all if that's what you want to do. They will be probably be grateful they can advertise your vacancy.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 13/02/2024 10:12

No, not unreasonable. Plenty of people do this.

ACynicalDad · 13/02/2024 10:12

They would probably be delighted.

dizzyduck77 · 13/02/2024 10:13

@ACynicalDad why delighted?

Nope. I did this. Was on sick and handed in my notice along with a renewal of my sick note. They didn’t blink an eyelid. Just accepted notice and note, wished my luck, arranged a time for me to return computer etc and booked an exit interview thing.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 13/02/2024 10:15

I agree with the others. Companies often hope employees who find the job affects their health like this will quit, it's not bad form at all.

dizzyduck77 · 13/02/2024 10:18

I'd been suffering quite badly with panic attacks and stress around work leading up to this, but physically felt fine. I am now having really bad physical symptoms, headache, dizziness, vomiting.. which may or may not be connected.. but there is no way I can work as I can barely walk in a straight line. I didn't really want to wait until I was back at work and my sick note ran out to hand my notice in.

Can you keep getting sick notes renewed? This one is only for a week.

Can you manage without your salary? And do you really want to leave this job or might it feel better when your health has improved or with some adjustments?

If your sick note is currently only for a week it sounds as if you could be making a hasty decision. It can certainly be extended while you are unwell.

Maybe speak with your GP and/ or a trusted person before deciding? It would be awful if you looked back and regretted it.

Obviously there are many factors we don’t know so ultimately you will know best.

MuggleMe · 13/02/2024 10:47

If you get paid sick leave don't feel pressured to quit rather than claim sick pay. Work should be supporting you in getting the pressure eased up so you stop having work related illness.

Mermaidsarereal · 13/02/2024 11:15

I'd maybe give it some time to think things through, just put a few sicknotes in for a few months and you may feel differently. I've been off work since October with stress and anxiety, I was ready to throw in the towel but after speaking with my manager and putting a lot of work into feeling positive over the last few months, I'm going back to work next week on a phased return.

How long is it possible to get a sick note for?

OP posts:
HungryandIknowit · 13/02/2024 11:19

It depends if you get sick pay and what the MRI reveals. There's no way I would hand my notice in if I had a potentially serious condition preventing me working for a period of time, and I would get sick pay from my employer for that period. I would just renew my sick note.

It totally depends on your illness and your doctor.

For as long as you are ill for. Your doctor should be happy to extend because you’re still having the symptoms.

Investigations take time even if you’re having them done privately. Have him sign you off for more sensible amount of time (maybe a month or so) so you can be upfront and let your employers know. In that time hopefully your doctor will figure out what the problem is and you’ll be on the mend.

Do not give in your notice, especially if you have generous sick pay or your employer has a group income protection policy in place. You can reassess once you are better.

PossumintheHouse · 13/02/2024 11:58

The length of your sick note depends entirely on how long you are ill for. Doctors will generally extend notes as and when they’re needed. I once had to take four months off, and my doctor would write notes for four weeks at a time, then we’d reassess.

It depends on what your illness is and whether you are able to return to work safely. Sick notes can be extended if you are still too unwell to work.
I have had a sicknote issued for stress/clinical depression for two weeks in the first instance, reviewed and extended to six weeks at the next appointment then regular reviews issuing six weekly unfit to work notes ongoing.
Due to my contract I could have taken 12 months on full pay but ultimately decided to resign after 4 months as I couldn't see any way I could recover while still attached to that workplace.
The relief I felt was amazing, they were also happy as they didn't have to pay 12 months salary.
Its not always the best choice but it was for me.

I was once off work for 6 months straight. I kept sending in my sick notes and my line manager liaised with me periodically to see how I was. I worked in local government, it wasn’t the job that was causing it, although they made adjustments in hours for my phased return.

I wanted to hand my notice in as I thought I was a lost cause and couldn’t see the wood for the trees, so glad I didn’t. Go to your G.P and explain how you feel and ask for another sick note until your closer to finding out what’s causing your sickness.
