Any car insurance people around?

I had a bit of a shunt last week, someone went into the back of my car when I was stationery, no question of fault on my side. He said he'd like to avoid insurance but I drive an expensive car and have been advised by the garage I bought it from (it's a Merc) that it needs a new boot lid, cost £6500 approx. I have also been advised that should I need to use my Mercedes warranty in the future, if the work isn't done by a Mercedes approved garage, it won't be covered under the guarantee, The other party is going to contact his insurers, I need to contact mine now. I've never had to deal with car insurance before, other than paying for it. What happens now? As the other side are liable, can I insist that they use a Mercedes approved garage? Will my insurance push for this?

An approved garage doesn't mean main dealership. Leave it with your insurance, this is what they do

Hi I work at senior level in insurance. As the accident is not your fault then you are entitled to be put back in exactly the same position you were before the accident. You can insist that the repair is done properly and by a Mercedes authorised garage. You should also hire a reasonably comparable car at an appropriate rate. My strong counsel is to make sure that the repair is done by a garage of repute which retains all warranties. Also look at guarantees on the repair. A good garage will offer either a very long guarantee or a lifetime guarantee.
