what are your interior design favourites? If you had to move to a new home, what are the first things you’d do?

For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almos...

It was unpopular on the other thread, but I like a well put together gallery wall, although I didn't know they were called that until I googled it.
If I was buying a house I wouldn't be that interested in their decor as long as the structure was sound.

I love a gallery wall too!!
im not into big a1 prints and prefer to fille the space with smaller things

I think the first thing I would do is a cosy tv area. Love a comfy sofa & soft rug.

It’s probably quite naff now, but we have a brick slip wall in our kitchen. They’re old looking bricks with lime mortar, so not incongruous in a very old house. It was unusual when we did it 6 years ago, but has become ubiquitous. Still love it though!

We also have a recessed wine cellar in the floor. Again, unusual when we did it - possibly a bit naff now.

Appropriate period features, whether it's an Edwardian villa or a 1970s estate home.

Properly proportioned rooms that suit the age of the house.

I love seeing family photos around a house. I didn't realise people don't like this til I read the other thread! I feel a lack of photos makes a house very impersonal.

Houseplants

How can you not like them?!

Fireplace as focal point, not TV

Skylights (ideally opening)

Open plan kitchen/living/dining with big doors to the garden … appreciate it’s a marmite choice but I love it (with separate utility & sitting room ideally)

Comfortable furniture - no sharp edges, skinny spindly legs or hard sofas

Brushed/satin/matt, not shiny

Natural materials - stone, leather, wool, wood.

Muted, calming colours. I like bright colours but not to live with a room full of them, day in day out.
