Sainsbury’s and its overuse of vouchers and annoying discount systems

Danc1ng1nthedark · 11/02/2024 07:23

It’s now driving me nuts. Aside from the separate prices for Nectar card holders I get sent some quite good vouchers through the post separately weekly dated £7.50 (and above )off a shop and a load of dated extra points awarded for certain items. They are all connected on a perforated sheet you have to rip apart and each token has a different date.I then get given masses (when I pay) of annoying separate paper non perforated slips. I also have a nectar card. Some slips are petrol discount you have to bizarrely give a slip to get back a slip. My purse is rammed.

I work full time and shop/ fill up on my way home from work once a week So at checkout I have to scan my nectar card and pull out masses of slips to sort through and rip. Check dates and check I get petrol back and also take off discount from my Nectar card. I get people huffing behind me and I’m having to be patient for people doing the same in front. The cashiers are sympathetic and think it’s nuts too. I know I should be super organised but I have no idea what necessarily going to end up buying, I’m often knackered and often can’t remember what I’ve exactly bought at checkout either to have all the correct slips to hand. Life is too frantic to have everything prepared before I shop.

Why can’t they just give us a better Nectar card points deal instead of all this faff?
Life is too short. Don’t want to think about the money I’m wasting if I don’t go through the rigmarole so honestly think I’m going to quit and go somewhere with less faff. Would probably save money not looking at Tu and Habitat in the process.

I don’t understand why them and Boots don’t just load the vouchers onto your card, so you just get the discount when you use the card. It’s a waste of time/paper/postage.

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/02/2024 07:26

I don’t see why they can’t add them automatically to nectar than wasting paper. Certainly the vouchers that print off at the checkout are based on your purchases.

VestPantsandSocks · 11/02/2024 07:26

YANBU. Unneccesarily complicated, I throw away /dont use the vouchers for the same reason!

Danc1ng1nthedark · 11/02/2024 07:32

Exactly!!!!! Just load them onto the bloody card.

I feel so sorry for the cashiers. You often have to then go through the rigmarole of them wading through a pile of vouchers to find the one that beeped due to not being the exact date or brand of an item. It’s ludicrous.

Use the app and they get sent to you on that. The coupons the till prints out is separate obviously but the main ones are just linked to your account and come off the at till without you having to do anything other than scan your nectar card.

LlynTegid · 11/02/2024 07:34

In a few years time there will be another discounting way that the main supermarkets use, no doubt.

bookish83 · 11/02/2024 07:36

Use the app and the discounts are on there. I havent had a thing in the post from Sainsburys in years.

I do get the point you are making but I also want to tell you to sort your vouchers before you stand in the checkout if it is that difficult!

BookWorm45 · 11/02/2024 07:42

I find it also extremely irritating and I hate the paper vouchers they automatically produce at the till. Have started shopping more at Tesco on account of this.

Danc1ng1nthedark · 11/02/2024 07:47

Do Tescos not do this? Interesting, I pass them too.

No not going stand in an aisle and empty the contents of my purse to sort though at the end of a tiring working week and weekly shop.

They really need to just make things simpler. I’ve seen so many elderly people struggling with the same.

I don’t get paper vouchers from Sainsbury’s, but looking at the responses above I assume it’s because I have the app.

It’s so people don’t use them.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 11/02/2024 08:08

Not had anything sent through the post in years; I’m another one with the app. Everything is preloaded on there, all registered automatically when I self scan.

Kazzyhoward · 11/02/2024 08:10

Same here with the app- had nothing in the post from them for years!

Danc1ng1nthedark · 11/02/2024 08:11

So do you still get all the paper vouchers at checkout with the app?

OP posts:
Danc1ng1nthedark · 11/02/2024 08:13

And do you have to self scan with it as I don’t want to do that.

Exactly. They want to stay competitive by offering discounts but want take up to be as low as possible.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 11/02/2024 08:14

I put all the vouchers into a sandwich bag and keep it in my orange elephant bag. Then I hand it to the lovely woman at the checkout and she sorts through them, throwing away any which are out of date. But I go to Sainsbury's at 7.30 am so she has time to do this.

Danc1ng1nthedark · 11/02/2024 08:16

Re the not wanting people to use them, exactly why I’d rather go elsewhere.

No, you don't. Just scan your card as usual.

YouveGotAFastCar · 11/02/2024 08:16

Tesco have a whole lot less discounts altogether, in my experience. They give less printed vouchers, though. They’ve also been called out a fair few times on their discounts mostly being on “junk”, rather than things you actually buy like Sainsbury’s, and I’ve never had a fuel voucher for Tesco.

Sainsbury’s makes the most economic sense for us, but I don’t have the rigmarole you do. We get vouchers in the app (I self scan, DH does not), so no postal vouchers, and few printed ones. Our petrol vouchers are still paper but we don’t need to scan it to get one, we just scan it at the petrol station, and the reduction in petrol is usually worth it! That’s the only paper one we really deal with. Everything else is in the app/card.

EasternStandard · 11/02/2024 08:18

I have never used the stuff that gets printed out. You’re right they should make it all digital

It’s a faff and not great use of paper and printing

maddening · 11/02/2024 08:20

Imo all tne offers should be on your card account and automatically applied and you can get either an email or in app conformation of what was applied.and what offers you have left.

Gunpowder · 11/02/2024 08:21

Completely agree. On my way home I also pass Tesco and Sainsburys and have started mostly going to Tesco for this reason. The reward points seem to rack up more quickly too.

FakeSucculent · 11/02/2024 08:32

I shop in Sainsbury's and have never had paper vouchers through the post?

I get the odd one for petrol printed at the self scan and occasionally pet insurance which goes straight in the bin.

If I had printed vouchers I'd look at what ones I intended to use before I went round the shop - it seems pretty stupid to wait until you're in a queue to start faffing about with them.

WigglyVonWaggly · 11/02/2024 08:39

Well, I’m annoyed now as I don’t receive ANY postal vouchers for money off. Just nectar deals on the app. All the special Nectar prices do is rub in my face how much more cheaply they could sell basic groceries to me for. It makes me feel ripped off, not ‘rewarded’.
