…to ask you to help me interpret this job application?

I’m applying for a job and I feel like this bit is worded very opaquely:

‘Please use this section to demonstrate why you think you would be suitable for this post, making reference to the criteria listed as essential in the job description and give examples of relevant skills and experience.

We recommend that you structure your answers using the STAR or CAR method. Each answer should not exceed 500 words.

Please do not write single answer sentences as failure to demonstrate how you meet what is being asked will result in your application not being considered.’

I’m fine with the STAR answer structure, but wtf is a ‘single answer sentence’?! Does this mean every part of the sentence needs to involve the full STAR structure?! Or do they mean ‘single sentence answers’? I’m so confused. If anyone can shed any light on this that would be very very helpful. Thank you so much!

I think it means single sentence answers.

I think it means don't just write one sentence, use all 500 words - or as close to 500 as you can get.

Hellocatshome · 10/02/2024 21:02

I think they mean single sentence answers.

Riverlee · 10/02/2024 21:02

I also think it means don’t answer with one sentence. They want you to elaborate with you answer, and write several sentences.

Good luck with your application.

Can you contact the person who listed the job to ask for clarification?

LittleMousewithcloggson · 10/02/2024 21:02

I would assume they mean one sentence answers
They are saying that you need to give full examples (that’s how I would read it, anyway)
I recruit and I am amazed at the amount of applicants that when asked to give examples of how they meet the required competencies will put, for example…
TEAMWORK: I work well in a Team

Thank you, lovely Mumsnet people! I think I was reading too much into it. Yes: I think my strategy will be to fill the 500 words, basically, and make them as STARry as possible… 💫

It means don't say something like "I was PA to the senior leadership team."
