To take DD to swimming lesson with a cough?

DD is 7 and has a pretty bad cough but is fine in herself and still wants to go to her swimming lesson tomorrow. You're probably thinking after 7 years I should know what to do, but she never usually just gets a cough, when she's ill it's often a fever, sickness, the works so she's too ill to go anywhere. So I don't really know what the correct etiquette is in this situation (if of course she doesn't become unwell overnight).

I’d take my son. He’s got to miss tomorrow and did last week for an ear infection! Which clearly is an issue! Just a cough but fine in herself then I’d say go!

I would keep her off. Can't think that it will do her any good.

Mine has had a cough for six weeks so that would have been a hell of a lot of missed swimming if I hadn't taken him! Post viral coughs can hang around without other symptoms for a long time. If it's chesty or has other symptoms I wouldn't.

Same as pp, mines had a cough for weeks and weeks
When he was properly ill he missed it as it's with school and they get cold but he's gone this week

If that is the only symptom and she is feeling well enough, I would go.
My kids would have coughs lasting weeks all winter and I was so glad we had grown beyond that by covid times as they would have never been allowed out.
Covid has put coughing individuals in a very tricky position imo. Just make sure she knows to stop and cough into her elbow rather than spraying it everywhere I guess!

Just a cough and she's been fine at school all week then yes I'd definitely take her. DS gets coughs that last weeks so he'd never be at swimming if we adopted the approach of being off with them.

If she’s just come down with it and feeling a little under the weather I’d probably keep her home. If it’s the tail end of a cold I would crack on

TheSnowyOwl · 09/02/2024 17:27

If she is well in herself and the exercise/cold of swimming won’t make her worse, I would take her.

She's had a cough since she had tonsillitis 5 weeks ago but it had got a lot better. It's worse as of yesterday so now thinking it's a new virus 🙄 but still saying she's fine in herself.

If she's coughing excessively then I would say no as I've since it where kids can swim people and start swallowing water
