Especially until the lambing season is over, but at all times, frankly. Sheep are clumsy, stupid and easily stumble when they are frightened. And they have good reason to be frightened of dogs.

Yes. Please keep your dogs under control.

Grew up on a farm and was surprised by the amount of dog owners that thought there dog was not one of those who would worry a sheep.

Not a diss on dog owners btw.

Terrribletwos · 08/02/2024 15:39

Their not there.

TheDuck2018 · 08/02/2024 15:42

That article is heartbreaking 😭
Absolutely keep your dogs under control. I'm a farmer's daughter and I've seen what can happen when they're not. Farmers have every right to shoot a dog that is worrying sheep, their livestock need to be protected.

Dotjones · 08/02/2024 15:44

Farmers are allowed to shoot dogs but in this case that wouldn't have made much of a difference because it was overnight. Dogs are a weapon and should be treated as such, people who don't control them properly should face the same consequences as if they were careless with a knife or gun and property gets damaged.

Sad

I regularly run past a farm that has a large sign up warning dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead or they may risk being shot. The number of idiots who ignore the sign you wouldn't believe.

I agree, this is a shocking case and the owner(s) should go to jail.

Might concentrate a few dog owner minds too if they thought they could end up being punished for the behaviour of their "fur baby".

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/02/2024 16:47

My dogs are always on lead when there is livestock around.

Exdonkeylover · 08/02/2024 18:03

A police force near me on Facebook (Rural crime team) put a post on about a month ago saying 4 dogs had been shot over rhe last few months by farmers protecting their sheep. All dogs were off the lead and chasing sheep.
The dog sees as fun, the sheep don't.
Keep it on a lead, you don't want to have to explain to thr kids that (insert dogs name here) because you didn't follow the signs and it's been shot.

I wish they were allowed to shoot the fucking OWNERS. Mind you, that'd be a bit too quick for my liking.

dildeewana · 08/02/2024 18:25

Oh I completely agree. Especially if they walk areas where livestock can sometimes break free and roam.

Just today a local "dog walker" has posted on FB that her dog has gone missing on the side of the mountain after taking off after a sheep. They are regularly on that particular path due to fence damage and tree feeling. You'd think of all people, someone who looks after other people's dogs would know better. The farmers around here are not always able to get to their livestock quickly due to the extreme terrain. That poor sheep has probably been chased off a cliff by that dog, which no doubt followed.

OrlandointheWilderness · 08/02/2024 18:28

I'll Add to that - pick up dog poo in livestock fields!! Doc faeces contains parasites that can cause serious harm to sheep and cattle.

Missingmyusername · 08/02/2024 18:32

3% YABU? do elaborate.

Those poor sheep and any animal in fact that is chased to its death or harmed in ANY way.

YANBU
