Thinking of changing my worklife

I've worked in care for 10 years now. I've job hopped alot because I've been unhappy at work the job I have now I enjoy and ive made some friends there. However I work 3 night shifts a week they are 12 hour shifts. I dont get my hour break because there isn't enough staff to cover any breaks. I often have to work a floor on my own which would be ok but some residents are violent and ive been hit many times. Its stressful as I have lots of work I need to do as well as make sure the residents are well looked after. Ive had a conversation with my dh and ive told him I need to have to go to 2 nights a week. This is because in part im absolutely exhausted and the stress and responsibility is overwhelming. At the moment I'm paying a lot of tax so every month with that national insurance etc im working 3 shifts for no money. Would I be unreasonable to drop to 2. I believe if I did that I.d be less tired and could give more to my role. I would feel better. And I would be around for my family more my youngest is 14 and I barely see him plus I wouldn't have to pay tax and could give some of my allowance to my dh. Money would be tight but my health is suffering at the moment I just feel so ill all the time. What do you guys think.

If you end up in a hospital bed money will be even tighter!

Can you experiment to drop to 2 shifts and see how it goes. And if it's really tight return to 3 shifts?

I struggle with night shifts so badly I am just looking for an opportunity to move and not have to do them anymore

Exhaustedineedhelp · 07/02/2024 19:24

I could pick up an extra shift here and there. Tbh I never want to return to 3. I just can't cope with it anymore. Totally agree with a hospital bed I know it sounds over the top but I think im heading that way.

Could you find a job without night shifts? It sounds exhausting.

xyz111 · 07/02/2024 19:34

Why are you paying a lot of tax? Are you paying a higher amount?

Exhaustedineedhelp · 07/02/2024 19:35

I'm looking but haven't found anything else. It would give me more time to search. Last night was the worse shift ever the nurse in charge was laughing at me ever time I spoke other people on shift were sat around while I did checks so I told them in no uncertain terms to step the fuck up and do their job. Tbh I feel really ill with it all. I worked sat sun off Monday now in tues weds thurs

I have no idea ive checked my tax code used the tax calculator it seems its right?? Tbh it was hurting my head trying to work it out. So for example if I earn 1.400. Im paying 165 a month tax and 45 national insurance plus pension payment of 70 quid. Its a lot over a year

You have to do what you feel is best, or you Try moving to a different care provider? Or go days?

PieAndLattes · 08/02/2024 05:37

That sounds about normal for tax. In your shoes I’d jack it in and get a job in a local supermarket or get some temp work through an agency. You can easily earn that there.

BCBird · 08/02/2024 05:42

Undervalued job and exhausting OP. Not helped by the fact the others taking the pee. I would look.for day work.

Move jobs and report to the cqc. This is totally unacceptable and is affecting the level of care given.
