Friend growing suspected cannabis plants

Krayola · 31/01/2024 22:30

My friend is a keen gardener and buys all the gardening mags on subscription. Sends off to gardeners world for seeds etc, attends gardening show at NEC

She often gives me random plants to grow but I’m not very good at it, forget to water them etc and they die. DH often takes over as he quite likes growing stuff too.

Anyway a while ago she split some seeds with us - said she’d got them off her mother in law who had got them off a neighbour. I started growing them in my office upstairs. After they had sprouted DH comes in looking at them with suspicion saying they look like weed. I laughed it off as my friend couldn’t be further from a cannabis growing wrong ‘un.

A month or so went by and DH said “these are 100% cannabis, the whole room stinks of it. I asked friend if her plants had grown and she said they were growing well and she thinks they’re some kind of tomato plant.

DH insisted we get rid of ours saying they were definitely cannabis, absolutely reeked of cannabis, looked like cannabis - they are cannabis.

Friend is still growing hers and now they seem very obviously cannabis to me too. I said to her jokingly “you know those plants look and smell remarkably like cannabis!” And she said she was looking forward to getting tomatoes off them but they didn’t fruit last year!! It’s so funny but at the same time she really needs to get rid of them doesn’t she?! She genuinely thinks they’re tomato plants!

So she doesn't posses a device that enables her to Google and you haven't shown her photos from Google?

Have you tried the app whereby you photograph it and it tells you the namenof the plant. Maybe seeing it in black and white will makechervtake notice. Sorry don't remember what it's called as I don't have it anymore. Not a gardener.

No do they work? I got a dog breed one and it was useless! Kept saying everything was a cross breed husky

Tomato plants do stink. I wouldn't have them in the house . The greenhouse smells of them. We had some bird seed once which husband used to give the birds. One day he brushed seed off his hands onto a large planter in the conservatory. They grew. Sons thought it hilarious telling us what they actually were.

You showed her a photo of a cannabis plant alongside a photo of a tomato plant and she still doesn't know the difference?

Anotherparkingthread · 31/01/2024 23:10

Tomato plants do stink and it's a very weedy smell, especially on the heirloom varieties.

Even if they are weed they are more likely to be hemp which won't bud really and it not at all like the strains that people smoke.

I'd let your friend carry on it's not hurting anybody.

Dogdilemma2000 · 31/01/2024 23:39

Tomato plants do stink and bit like weed. When was the last time you were next to a growing weed plant OP?

OneTC · 31/01/2024 23:45

Baby tomato plants and baby weed plants look pretty similar

QueenMegan · 31/01/2024 23:45

Cannabis plants need a bit more care than just a bit of water. Tomato plants stink

blackpanth · 31/01/2024 23:49

I doubt its weed

EBearhug · 31/01/2024 23:55

Cannabis leaves and tomato leaves are quite distinct once grown a bit. A photo should easily show what they are.

Cannabis doesn't need much care to grow. If you want it to produce high levels of THC it needs more care, but otherwise, no more difficult than tomatoes, which you can be really fussy with, pinching out shoots and stuff.

PaminaMozart · 31/01/2024 23:58

I suggest you start growing some tea leaves.
Then you'll be able to organize a real storm in a teacup...

Tomato plants do stink to be fair

This feels like the start of the plot to saving grace 😁

ANYone these days who can't tell the difference between a tomato or a weed plant needs their bumps felt.

To get a weed plant to ''flower'' needs specific circumstances as well- they don't do it automatically.

A simple ''google'' will tell the difference between the two plants.

I think OP is pulling our legs.

oakleaffy · 23/04/2024 00:20

Simple pic from a second of googling..

{Even the pic says ''Duh''! at the bottom if you click on it }

Destroy the ones you have, leave her to it. You’ve made your point, up to her now.

Banana1979 · 23/04/2024 00:25

It might be hemp? But

Weed plants need heat lamps and high humidity to grow also it is only the bud that you smoke
most seeds need to be bought from specific websites as they need to be feminised in to flower / be useful to a smoker

I did actually have a load come up in our old garden from bird seed. 1990's

They were very pretty but completely unusable.

Chanvre, {industrial hemp} not the THC varieties.

While bog standard cannabis plants need "special circumstances" ( mainly hours of light, 12 hours on and 12hours off), there are now strains that flower automatically. Oddly, they're called "automatics" and there are hundreds of varieties.

But I agree there's a fair chance the plants are hemp rather than cannabis - hemp seeds are common in bird seed mixes.

The police will hardly be beating a path to her door - she might even live in parts of Europe where it is entirely legal to grow weed.

It's up to her if she wants to do it.

It is legal here if one has a licence from the home office.

They must be ruderalis types? -if they haven't a photoperiod?

CammyChameleon · 23/04/2024 00:43

Tomato plants look entirely different to cannabis/hemp. No one looks at a tomato plant and thinks it looks like cannabis and vice versa.

My dad worked at a local paper when someone accidentally grew a load of cannabis/hemp plants in his garden and got a press photographer round to photograph him with these enormous mystery plants. One of the guys at the paper was kind enough to ring him and tell him what they were, and that he might want to get rid before a nosey neighbour or over-enthusiastic copper caught wind...
