To turn down a small promotion because of this..

Called into an office today by my line manager, bigger boss joined half way through conversation. Very casual but complimentary chat, they're pleased with my work and would like me to take a more senior role, slight pay rise but nothing too exciting. It was left with me saying I would think about it then we would meet again to discuss on Monday. I go back into my office to be met by a trio of colleagues (same position as Me) who asked straight away "So was it a Yes? Did you take it?" Now, I had no idea the offer was coming, so how did they.. my workplace is known for being quite catty and clicky, including Management.
I'm the only part time member of staff so don't get involved in anything, just head down and work, then Home. I was so taken back by them knowing, maybe I'm paranoid but feeling uncomfortable it had clearly been discussed throughout the team! Confused Thoughts please Mumsnetters?

Maybe one of them had been offered it and it was turned down.

so more money, promotion and you want to turn it down because other people knew/guessed? give your head a wobble

ArtificialElephants · 31/01/2024 19:44

I wouldn't be too impressed either but to turn down the promotion is to cut your nose off to spite your face.

Don't turn it down just because someone cannot keep their trap shut.

Hankunamatata · 31/01/2024 19:45

I'd start by trying to negotiate better pay rise

Pupupaway · 31/01/2024 19:46

100% hear what you're saying, to be honest I'm not too fussed about the promotion as it really isn't an area I enjoy but I also don't feel like joining the senior team would be a wise move considering they're not very professional with confidentiality?

I can see why you feel weird about them knowing, but you do say that you stay out of the office gossip and keep your head down so it’s maybe not that surprising others know things you haven’t heard yet? I don’t see why that’s connected to whether you take the promotion, do want to do the more senior role or not?

Pupupaway · 31/01/2024 19:49

@elizzza It's only connected because I don't think it's very professional of the Management to discuss such things before approaching Me first?

They obviously knew such a role was available and if they weren't being offered it, by elimination it had to be you. There is nothing to be worried about there at all I don't think. Doesn't mean you have to take it though.

GrumpyPanda · 31/01/2024 19:50

Could it be the role was offered to somebody else first and they turned it down given it's more work for essentially the same pay?
