Posting here for traffic.

I know nothing about gaming or laptops. DD wants one for her birthday. Anyone know about these things??

Mine is an Asus republic of gamers 16gb laptop that I paid for in installments from laptops direct. I bought it for Photoshop rather than gaming but it works well.

It depends on the budget & the kind of games she's going to play (and her age). A laptop capable of playing all or just most AAA games is expensive & you're looking at mid range at the very least. If you're REALLY splashing out, look at Alienware (and also could you be my mum for my next birthday?), that gives you an idea of how much a true gaming Laptop can cost.

Find out the minimum specs for the games (it's all online) she plays & then get something a little above that.

Lenovo Legion pro 5

Lenovo Legion. Got it secondhand at CEX. It’s excellent.

Don’t go near Alienware
I had tons of problems with their laptops.

What level of gaming? My DD (26) has the Acer nitro 5, from Argos, she plays steam games, the Sims etc. She used to have a more expensive gaming laptop but found that she didn't need its capabilities.

LemonLight · 27/01/2024 19:03

It will depend a lot on your budget to be honest but lenovos and Acer's are pretty good. I have an Acer helios and I think it's fantastic!
I'd advise an Nvidia GPU and an intel i7 with as much ram as you can afford. A lot of laptops you can add additional ram as well. SSDs are preferred to HDDs for gaming. YouTube has some good laptop reviews.

Another vote for Acer.

I was thinking of around £500. Are these laptops your suggesting in that price range?

firesidegerbil · 03/02/2024 08:07

£500 is the absolute max though

How much you want to spend?

Mambo19866 · 03/02/2024 08:23

Under 500 is hard the republic of gamers ones on Amazon ASUS TUF F15 FX506HC are good and they have 0% payment plan with Amazon over 5 months but start at 679.

@firesidegerbil
Does it need to be a laptop, i.e are her friends using PCs and she wants to join in, or is the integrated screen a thing you need?

I ask because a potential solution is to get an Xbox Series S and use the change (they are about £240 and will run Minecraft just fine I believe) to buy either a little monitor for it or a cheaper laptop for general laptop things.

AncientSkaterGirl · 03/02/2024 09:01

Depends on your budget. I got a Asus Nitro 5, 1TB hard drive, 16GB ram woth option to upgrade (not all laptops will.have this option) But this cost me 1k (I haven't yet upgraded the RAM) it does only i7 12th gen processor so not the best but it does OK.

You would get more for your money with a desk top amd it is easier to upgrade.

AncientSkaterGirl · 03/02/2024 09:03

Not ASUS 🙈 ACER

firesidegerbil · 03/02/2024 12:39

Okay so I think from these that I need to go upto about £700.

I'm looking at the the Acer nitro 5 or the Asis TUF F15 at the moment. Seem to be about the same price. No idea which might be better!

Thanks and any more advice gratefully received

I think she really needs a new laptop anyway because hers is slow. But that is something I will ask her about, thank you
