Washing machine drama

Aibu to not understand how the fabric softener drains from this compartment?

There's no holes apart from the 3 tiny holes you can see. There is usually a covering on this section which you can see in the second photo and it clearly says MAX. So how is it supposed to drain? It isn't draining and I've cleaned the washing machine with various things to ensure no blockages. I'm so confused 😐

it's called a siphon effect.

in the final rinse the water is directed into the softener compartment causing a syphon effect and then basically mix together with the softener and flow jnto the drum through these tiny holes

greenacrylicpaint · 26/01/2024 14:21

sort of like emptying an aquarium by sucking on a bit of hosepipe

I rarely use conditioner because it is nasty stuff, but once in a while I need to. It never drains out of the compartment unless I dilute it with water.

Much easier to use white vinegar.

Ahhh thanks for explaining that! So interestingly when I poured lots of water through, the next wash did have some softener through it (as I could smell it)

Have you cleaned the roof bit where the water comes in from into the drawer? It often gets clogged up with black gunk. I use bleach spray and a toothbrush to try to keep the holes in the roof clean

dementedpixie · 26/01/2024 18:51

Water comes in from the roof area and fills the fabric softener compartment until it reaches the top of the 3 holes. The siphon effect then causes the water/softener mix to be dispensed into the drum

Siphons out of the top.

I haven't used fabric softener for a couple of years now and my laundry is fine. You really don't need it.

no, more like emptying an aquarium by sucking a hosepipe.

dementedpixie · 26/01/2024 20:34

Take the drawer out and look inside the compartment at the roof area. There should be lots of little holes there, some are over the fabric softener bit of the drawer

RandomButtons · 26/01/2024 20:38

It’s a Pythagorean cup or siphon. Pretty cool.

relentlessissue · 26/01/2024 21:24

Thanks! I'll have a look tomorrow

My washing machine, that was rented, had problems from the start. The repair man lifted it on its side and the concrete fell out. This was a "reconditioned " one.
I think I prefer your drama. 😁
