AIBU to want some money back?

so I had new floors on both levels of the house done in October. I got 3 quotes and went with the one with the most reviews online. Only one bad out of 250 +. So they came mid Oct. We got all the furniture moved into one room on each level ready, not easy as you can imagine. Then 15 mins before the time they told me, I got an excuse about their van. I literally begged them to come and eventually they did. Worked until 3, not finished and said be back in morning. Next day came and still had two rooms upstairs to do. Said would be back on Wednesday but could they be paid. So I did stupidly. Wednesday they had Covid. Nothing since. I’ve contacted them but nothing. So they have been paid but two rooms had not been done and all the door bits needed filling as the skill wasn’t great and big gaps in the laminate etc, bits coming apart and joints not spaced correctly. Same boards next to each other so look weird. Where the level drops by the door instead of making sure the planks continue the line they don’t etc. so not a great job. Didn’t use the edging things that I asked him too for the guarentee. I have asked for money back but I think I’m blocked, I text, and emailed. How do I find out the address? Not online that I can find. Just a name of a company that only seems to be on the my builder website. My builder don’t want to know either. I have his van reg but I do t know if I can use that to find him. Anyone have an idea? I want to take him to court but I need an address.

Are they on Checktrade, Facebook and Twitter? If so, leave public reviews - just what you’ve written here. Get in touch with Trading Standards and report them. Take them to the small claims court. Do you have a receipt or any evidence that you gave them money?

Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 13:58

I can’t find them anywhere.

Only a witness to money being paid. No receipt.

This seems like a lesson learned type situation.

Londonrach1 · 25/01/2024 14:06

You need the address of the company, name, receipt for the money, photos of the work of not work and go through small claims.

Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:09

I’ll not bother then. Seems a good scam though.

Why on earth did you pay them?

Itslegitimatesalvage · 25/01/2024 14:13

Have a friend hire them, and get the friend to say they’ll drop round with the deposit and ask for an address to bring the cash to.

Itslegitimatesalvage · 25/01/2024 14:13

Then obviously your friend doesn’t turn up and cancels the job, blocks etc. Get them to use fake details or whatever.

PeoniesLilac · 25/01/2024 14:17

My Builder must have more information and must help you. Keep hassling them, including on social media. They are "Mumsnet Rated" apparently.

So not only did you pay them before they finished, you paid in cash and didn't get a receipt? Really sorry op but even if you take them to court, you have no objective way of of proving that you paid them (I know you said you had a witness to it but anyone could ask a friend to say that)

Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:35

I just didn’t think and I thought as they had come twice already and seemed ok it would be fine.

OP posts:
Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:36

I’ve always paid tradesmen in cash and I don’t ever think I’ve had a receipt.

Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:36

My builder told me to sort it out with them directly. Helpful!

Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:37

Didn’t ask for a deposit, so can’t do that.

OP posts:
Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:39

I’m an idiot I realise that but surely they shouldn’t be able to scam people like this?

If you want some redress you need to create hell for My Builder. Check what "Mumsnet Rated" means and go from there. Put your situation all over their social media. Check Trustpilot and MoneyExpert to see what other people have experienced with My Builder.

You feeling hopeless now, I'm sure, but you need to kick up a huge fuss if you want to get anywhere.

Wakeywake · 25/01/2024 14:43

Look them up on Companies House, you should be able to get an address. But tbh even if you take them to small claims and win, chances are you'll never see your money back.

Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:50

Not on companies house so maybe sole trader?

OP posts:
Allofaflutter · 25/01/2024 14:50

I don’t have SM so I’ll have to get help with that.

PeoniesLilac · 25/01/2024 15:11

I just googled Mumsnet Rated:

www.mumsnet.com/h/mumsnet-rated

I'd report your thread to Mumsnet and make sure they know how wrong things can go with MyBuilder. May be MN can help?

Sunshine322 · 25/01/2024 15:13

You are not being unreasonable to want your money back but you have been the victim of some rogue traders. As you paid in cash and have no receipt, it’s unlikely you will see your money again even if you get hold of their details. Reputable traders never ask for payment before the work is complete. Spread the word about what has happened to you, leave a scathing, honest review so others can see the issues you have had.

PeoniesLilac · 25/01/2024 15:20

Put a review of Mybuilder's lack of help on TrustPilot. I've looked back and MyBuilder
do eventually reply to these. They last replied about six days ago. Posting here can prompt a company to act.

You don't need social media for this, just an email address.

If they’re a company can you search on companies house?
