I'm always amazed by how popular maccy d's still is. The food is completely tasteless. Yet, huge queues at the drive thru...

the80sweregreat · 24/01/2024 06:10

They should call it a ' small Mac'

It is only a good idea before you buy it. I had a craving for a big mac the other day so went and got us all what we wanted and it was a total let down plus an expensive let down.

CobraChicken · 24/01/2024 03:30

Are you sure @HappiestSleeping ?

I'm pretty sure that Big Mac patties were never the same size as their "quarter pounder" burgers.

I think the difference is between pre-cooked and post cooked. The quarter pounders are 4 ounces after cooking.

You're correct though, they were never as big as the quarter pounders, but they were a lot bigger than they are today.

Nah, I like a mackys. It's my preferred fast food.

Each to their own.

Well we will have to assume the long queues indicate that people really enjoy it?

Maybe it's you we should be surprised with?

Ounces?
Are you American?

In the UK, surely the weight would be in grams?

I am in the UK. McDonald's, however, is an American company, and use ounces.

CasperGutman · 24/01/2024 09:24

No. They're the same size they've always been. Burgers just used to be smaller generally, as did many other portion sizes. The result is that a Big Mac used to feel like you were getting two normal burgers, but now it feels like you're getting two tiny burgers. Hence the increasing tendency of McDonald's to offer specials like the Double Quarter Pounder and Double Big Mac to satisfy greedy modern appetites.

ETA: Actually, possibly it has shrunk but I'm just not old enough to remember.... There are some photos here that suggest the Big Mac did actually shrink, at least in the US, but that it did so around 1975.

AnOldCynic · 24/01/2024 10:49

@purple5ky I'm still gutted I can't fit Hula Hoops on my fingers anymore.

ShinyPikachu · 24/01/2024 11:08

I've not noticed a size difference in McDs.

Wetherspoons burgers are about half the size they used to be though. You used to get a good sized thick juicy burger but it's now a fraction of the size, about half the thickness and even two together just aren't the same as the one thick one you used to get.

PicklesAndTequila · 24/01/2024 11:10

I get a side of nuggets and an apple pie with it.

PossumintheHouse · 24/01/2024 11:12

Haven’t had one for a couple of years now, but it would surprise me in the slightest. I always used to bulk mine up with extra onions, gherkins and Big Mac sauce. A lot of McDonald’s will add extra salad items for free.

Yes, I love me a 133 grammer with bacon and cheese!

Ifailed · 24/01/2024 11:20

Apparently a food chain launched a 1/3 lb burger in the USA in the 80s, but it failed because most customers thought it was smaller than a 1/4 lb burger.

the80sweregreat · 24/01/2024 11:22

You can buy ' giant ' hula hoops in multi packs
I'm not sure if they fit on your fingers though !
They are called ' big hoops'

budgiegirl · 24/01/2024 11:25

Quarter pounders are 4 oz raw weight. No idea how much they weigh after cooking, but I think Big Mac burgers are less than 2oz raw weight.

I'm not sure they've got smaller, they did seem huge when I was a kid, but they've been the size they are now for quite some time, and probably always were - at least post late 70's.

Wagon Wheels, however - that's a whole different matter ...

There are two tiny 45g burgers in a big Mac.

I don't get it at all about McDonalds. I had one about 13 years ago, got stuck on the motorway and there was one in the services. I had fond memories of them as a younger person. Anyhow it literally tasted of nothing, was the most bizarre experience eating something that tasted of absolutely nothing.

You do what!

You still have an apple pie when the McFlurry is on offer...... shameful!

PicklesAndTequila · 24/01/2024 13:18

I'm not really a McFlurry fan.
Sorry.
I can fit hula hoops on my fingers though, the beef ones are the best.

Ok, I'll leave it there on the McFlurry

But

Salted hula hoops win hands down and as a second salt and vinegar!

PicklesAndTequila · 24/01/2024 13:33

Incorrect, beef all they way.
Put them on your fingers and dip them in dips.
Game changer.
