Garage damaged my car. AIBU?

I took my car in to what seemed like a reputable garage for some work - over £1000 worth. I collected my car from them after hours and discovered they'd broken my parcel shelf, which they hadn't mentioned when they called to say it was ready. It's completely broken and unusable, so anything I put in my boot will be visible. They also left my back seat in a state.

I (politely) complained and the garage ordered me a 'new' shelf which they said they would fit. When I turned up, it wasn't new. It was covered in paint stains, which won't come out, and generally dirty. I told them I couldn't accept this.

At this point the manager got the hump and said my old one wasn't in perfect condition. It wasn't in perfect condition, but it was in good condition and not stained.

They agreed to purchase one that was actually new. Except they've now come back and said they can't find a new one.

I've found a new one online, but it's £250.

AIBU in thinking they should pay for this? Or should I put up with the stained one? I really hate being a PITA but I've been trying to sort this with them for weeks and I'm so bloody fed up now.

Nope they should replace your parcel shelf with a new one, since they are responsible for the damage. Have any conversations concerning it occurred online, or are they all happening in person? I would put everything in writing and ask the garage to carry out the repairs. If you don’t get the response you want, escalate this to the ombudsman or seek advice from Citizens Advice.

We've been corresponding mostly by email. His comment about my original shelf not being in perfect condition was in person.
