To buy velcro shoes for my 10 yo DS?

Overheard football mums talking about how there's no way they'd buy velcro shoes for their DS. Our children are still in primary school at the moment but some have older DS's who've gone to secondary school this year. Consensus was they'd look 'ridiculous' in velcro shoes.
It's not occured to me at all, my yr 5 and yr 3 boys both got velcro shoes in September and I'd probably look at the same again next year, it's easier and they are happy with them.
I'm now wondering if this is a 'thing' or just these mum's opinions? Don't want my sensitive lad getting picked on at secondary for my lack of thought!

These threads always make me
sad when I read the replies froM grown adults and remind me why I dread sending daughter in to a mainstream secondary school

the instant - I wouldn’t send my secondary school child with Velcro shoes
followed by questioning why they are not being taught to tie laces

shouldn’t we be asking why parents are not teaching their children not to bully for ones shoe choices and to understand that people have different issues and different abilities.

the child who can not tie laces is not the issue … but the child who is a bully is.

Quite a lot of the kids in my school (secondary) still have Velcro shoes. I don’t think anyone notices or cares. I’ve never known anyone to be picked on because of it.
