Any recommendations for prom dress shops or companies?

Definitely look for a dress agency in your local town. The one in ours has amazing prom dresses for a fraction of the cost new.

I took my granddaughter shopping for her prom dress this week and made an appointment at a shop. I rather expected a bit of a 'Say Yes to the Dress' experience where they'd at least ask what my budget was and maybe someone to assist and advise. I'd been on their website and had seen there were quite a number of dresses within my budget range so was hopeful of getting something she loved. However, when we got there, the young shop assistant simply asked my granddaughter what colour she wanted and pointed us to a rack crammed with that colour. Obviously, my granddaughter started to pull out dresses that appealed to her and we asked to try them on. She absolutely fell in love with one of them and I didn't have the heart to refuse to buy it (despite it being way over what I hoped to pay). I should just point out that in no way is my granddaughter a brat; she's got a few siblings and money is always tight. I'd promised to buy her a prom dress and was quite happy to do so. So, a couple of points if you're thinking of prom dress shopping and don't want to get fleeced. Discuss budget first, be upfront with the assistants and ask where the cheaper options are hidden (all the dresses on the showroom rails were hideously expensive, some at £800/£900- I got off relatively lightly) and be firm. But be aware that this is a MASSIVE thing to your DD or GD and be prepared to bend a little...

My DD had the most stunning dress from Quiz clothing for a fraction of the price of the wedding dress shops. Don't assume cheaper options look cheaper, most of the dress shops sell cheap imported from China dresses. We also found John Lewis had some amazing reduced price evening wear that would have been suitable, designers included. TK Maxx is also worth a look.

JJs house - shipped from abroad so can take up to a month, but dress was lovely quality, exactly like the pics plus the size guide-measurements were accurate. They also do a try of 3 dresses for 20 pounds, tho we just went straight to buying, as refunds would have been accepted

Another vote for Quiz. DD found the perfect prom dress there.

Yes, I've been well and truly fleeced...my own fault as I didn't come on here for advice first! Still, my beloved GD is an a state of euphoria so it was (maybe) worth it. 😉

A dress that is going to be worn more than a couple of times.

As mentioned on other threads, I think this an American tradition that should stop happening in this country.
