Just started my thesis having not read a book in over a decade…wrote the word ‘agency’ which was de rigueur when I did my masters a good 15 years ago and wondered if it’s now a bit passe? ‘foreground’ was another one. Deconstructing….etc. For those who have been in academia for a long time, what are the concepts/words that are getting bandied about (rightly or wrongly) now? I’m curious if times have changed.

Impossible to say without discipline or even sub discipline.

Bookridden · 18/01/2024 20:36

Decolonisation
Marginalised voices
Dialectic
Hegemony

GodAgainstAll · 18/01/2024 20:40

Still with the dialectic?

OP posts:
KStockHERO · 18/01/2024 20:41

What discipline are you in? I'm guessing humanities or social sciences?

For me:
> Intersectionality
> Privilege
> Global majority
> Decolonisation
> Post-colonial
> Queering
> Identify as
... All nonsense bollocks.

Also, very few academics seem to know the meaning of the word "ambivalent". Irritates the fuck out of me.

KStockHERO · 18/01/2024 20:43

On the teaching side:

> Flipped classrooms
> Diversification of assessments
> Reflexivity
> Feedforward
> Co-production

ColleenDonaghy · 18/01/2024 20:47

As someone who joined academia in her late 30s from a profession that values communication and abhors jargon - it's all terrible. Grin

GodAgainstAll · 18/01/2024 21:01

just thinking how I can crowbar flipped classrooms and cyber physical into an epidemiology thesis. Might be a way to see if my supervisor is actually reading my draft….

Really? Not one book? How can an academic have not read one book in more than ten years ?

GodAgainstAll · 18/01/2024 21:05

I might be slightly overplaying it there.

Public health buzzwords:

inequality
equity
intersectionality
post-covid landscape
marginalised communities
cost-effective
resource-low context

When presenting your work, be sure to start every other sentence with “in terms of”

GodAgainstAll · 18/01/2024 21:59

@KellyanneConway - I’ve been in a lot of health managers meetings recently and everyone says ‘godagainstall, I’m sure you can speak to that’. Speak to. Weird.

liminal and affect were all the rage a couple of years ago but things may have moved on

Doormatnomore · 18/01/2024 22:17

I was enjoying this with nothing to contribute then thought I better google godagainstall cause I haven’t a clue what that’s supposed to me. Bedtime for me I think.

I have another current one: generative!

marthasmum · 18/01/2024 22:24

I like all these! Is this why I am an academic 😂 I am currently getting some good use out of ‘conflating’ in my thesis

Oh yes, lots of concepts and inanimate objects tend to “speak to”, often when they are “in that space” or sometimes, “in the round”

GodAgainstAll · 18/01/2024 22:27

@ConstitutionHill i have a friend who is DEEP into being an academic. Even a general chitchat with them will yield 2 or 3 of those.

OP posts:
GodAgainstAll · 18/01/2024 22:29

@ALunchbox feed forward - nice

OP posts:
KellyanneConway · 18/01/2024 22:29

Ooh and people don’t just do things like provide services or collect and analyse data, they “go on a journey” like it’s some kind of spiritual awakening rather than just doing a job

Sodullincomparison · 18/01/2024 22:55

@ALunchbox now you’ve got me worried as I’ve got paradigm in my thesis title. Don’t want to have an unfashionable thesis title forever associated with me.

back to the drawing board…

Gormless · 18/01/2024 23:05

‘Disruptor’

Reckon synthesise is out.
