To ask about contemporary academic lingo bingo

Just started my thesis having not read a book in over a decade…wrote the word ‘agency’ which was de rigueur when I did my masters a good 15 years ago and wondered if it’s now a bit passe? ‘foreground’ was another one. Deconstructing….etc. For those who have been in academia for a long time, what are the concepts/words that are getting bandied about (rightly or wrongly) now? I’m curious if times have changed.

Impossible to say without discipline or even sub discipline.

Also, very few academics seem to know the meaning of the word "ambivalent". Irritates the fuck out of me.

As someone who joined academia in her late 30s from a profession that values communication and abhors jargon - it's all terrible.

just thinking how I can crowbar flipped classrooms and cyber physical into an epidemiology thesis. Might be a way to see if my supervisor is actually reading my draft….

Really? Not one book? How can an academic have not read one book in more than ten years ?

I might be slightly overplaying it there.

resource-low context

When presenting your work, be sure to start every other sentence with “in terms of”

liminal and affect were all the rage a couple of years ago but things may have moved on

I was enjoying this with nothing to contribute then thought I better google godagainstall cause I haven’t a clue what that’s supposed to me. Bedtime for me I think.

Haven't heard paradigm in a while

Oh yes, lots of concepts and inanimate objects tend to “speak to”, often when they are “in that space” or sometimes, “in the round”

@ConstitutionHill i have a friend who is DEEP into being an academic. Even a general chitchat with them will yield 2 or 3 of those.

Ooh and people don’t just do things like provide services or collect and analyse data, they “go on a journey” like it’s some kind of spiritual awakening rather than just doing a job

@ALunchbox now you’ve got me worried as I’ve got paradigm in my thesis title. Don’t want to have an unfashionable thesis title forever associated with me.
