Aliens? Satellites? What is it?

Posting here for traffic. What on earth is this?

Walking DDog and I look at the stars. I notice what looks like lights up a tower to warn planes, but it's the middle of suburbia with no tower and the lights are not red. Then I realise they are moving in a completely uniform motion and speed across the sky. I thought we must be on a flight path and never noticed but they weren't flashing like planes do and are way too close to be planes.

Approx 30 but maybe more as I was more shocked than counting. It then went out of sight but someone 100 miles away then saw them about 10/20 mins later.

What is it??????? Can't attach videos but there is also a video of them moving across the sky and going out of view due to distance I guess.

Haggisfish3 · 18/01/2024 19:08

Yes, Elon musks star link.

NetballHoop · 18/01/2024 19:08

Elon Musk space junk (Starlink)

StarTrails · 18/01/2024 19:09

Ha well that was easy. Are we sure?

Really was! I'm happy we're not being invaded but honestly a little disappointed.

I saw them too, driving in open, dark countryside... looked quite shocking, like stars lined up at regular intervals. Thought it was aliens! DD took photo, but, of course, it doesn't do it justice...

I was disappointed with the explanation too, @StarTrails ! 😂

StarTrails · 18/01/2024 19:35

You got more in a row than I did. Great pic considering. I feel like we are living in a sci fi film. It truly was amazing.

I freaked out to fuck tho. Asked my dog what he thought it was.

Starlink!
Very cool

Somatosensational · 18/01/2024 19:39

Ahh I would love to see starlink! I even followed a website that tracks when they’re visible for a while but no luck. Doesn’t help that there’s a lot of light pollution where I am Sad

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 18/01/2024 19:41

There were far more than in the pick @StarTrails they only stop because we were inside the car! Far brighter than the photo looks, too!
I was so excited and enthralled till DD looked it up and discovered it was Elon bloomin Musk.

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 18/01/2024 19:42

See if this pic is any better...

I was totally freaked out by them too. Kept saying to my 4 year old "I think I'm going mad...." 🤣

Peachandwatermelon · 18/01/2024 19:48

I saw what looked like planes in the sky this evening but then realised they weren't and thought maybe drones or something. North Yorkshire area. What's Starlink?

Motomum23 · 18/01/2024 19:50

Starlink is Elon musks global Internet system. Basically loads of satellites in lines.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 18/01/2024 19:50

I think these ones launched from Vandenberg in California on January 14th

TheNinny · 18/01/2024 19:50

starlink. saw it a while ago but only 3 in a line and one by one they disappeared in order. defo thought aliens until i looked it all up 😂 had a family member confirm it via radar stuff he looks up for astronomy stuff.

That made me laugh.

What did DDog say?

inamarina · 18/01/2024 19:55

I’ve seen them before, such a fascinating sight! Had no idea what they were at first.

megletthesecond · 18/01/2024 20:00

I'm jealous, I still haven't seen starlink. Used to spot the space station all the time when the kids were younger.

Jupiter is out there at 7 o'clock past the moon if you look.

StarTrails · 18/01/2024 20:17

@Mojodojocasahaus just like a woof sound.

Just kidding. Zero response. Completely ignored me as per. Prick. 😂😂😂

This is what I'm wondering... why have I never seen them before? Do they keep going round and round? How long do they last as I'm concerned about waste and space pollution.

I got some pretty shit photos of that too

My phone is usually really good at getting star photos but it was strange tonight. That's why I was staring at it so intently.

I saw this! Amazing sight but eerie at the same time I thought, the way they were moving across the sky. Only lasted a few mins and then they disappeared
