I massively need more carbs when I'm due on. It really helps with brain fog and also overall mood.

Have just had about a third of one of those Tony Chocolonely bars and I am not kidding, it was like switching a lightbulb on in my head Grin my thoughts are sharper!

I read something before about carbs boosting serotonin premenstrually, so maybe that's it? But then I read we should avoid refined carbs for an easier period?

Perhaps it's just very individual? Do you get a noticeable effect from any particular foodgroups during your luteal phase in general, or your pre-menstrual days in particular?

Carb city here. It’s the only thing which makes it better.

WonderfulUsername · 17/01/2024 18:54

No, it makes no difference to me at all.

SingingSands · 17/01/2024 18:54

I need ALL THE CARBS just before I'm due on.

All of them.

The whole lot.

LegoDeathTrap · 17/01/2024 18:55

Carb city. Also dark chocolate.

No special effect, just an urge so strong that if you stand between me and my Chocolony I’ll bite your head off, spit it out because it’s not carbs, and proceed to the chocolate.

I've always had really awful periods and I've tried everything over the years - for me, the only things which have made any difference are Tranexamic acid tablets on my heaviest days, iron tablets (daily) and regular/daily exercise.

Carbs, but sweet ones. A bag of crisps isn't going to make me feel better but a pack of biscuits will. And then another pack of biscuits. Then a chocolate bar.

Makeupalley · 17/01/2024 18:57

Feed me all the carbs. I don't think I feel better for it, more like a great lazy sloth. But it's an insatiable craving for stodge

CharmedCult · 17/01/2024 18:58

I’m usually ravenous but not necessarily for just carbs, if anything I crave more protein.

wheresmyshoe · 17/01/2024 19:00

I become ravenous for carbs. I'm experimenting with upping my protein generally this month and I think it has helped calm my inner savage carb beast.

pizzaHeart · 17/01/2024 19:02

Big increase the night before.
I’m always off for late cup of tea with biscuits or toast. Add tears and mood changes into the mix and it works better than any period trackers.
Surprisingly I go to normal attitude to carbs once my period has started: I eat them of course but the night before I eat them like mad
A few times DH drove to a late shop at 10pm to find me biscuits. He usually jokes: Better to be safe then sorry.

BarrelOfOtters · 17/01/2024 19:05

Menopausal now…but yes all the carbs….

but if I could resist them and ate a more balanced protein heavy diet…
i felt better than on the carbs.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 17/01/2024 19:10

Severe carb cravings and specifically bread, like really decent bakery smelling bread.

Baguettes, Soughdough, Fociatta with sundried tomatoes, Tiger Loaf, Ciabatta, Warm soda bread etc.

Sliced pan and broiche or any of the lighter stuff won't cut it at all.

A proper bread monster for 3 days before it starts and then when it starts, I immediate stop wanting bread completely.

Yes, a weirdo bread monster but it's so good.

mindutopia · 17/01/2024 19:22

Never really thought about it, so probably not.

SENwoes · 17/01/2024 19:26

Yeah it’s a thing. This book goes into the science of when it’s good to reduce/increase carbs according to your cycle.

I’m due in the next couple of days and am massively craving sweet stuff. Unfortunately it doesn’t help my PMDD at all.
