To be freaking out waiting for womb biopsy results ?

janicegarvey · 17/01/2024 08:16

A few months ago I had an ultrasound due to experiencing light spotting after my periods (I'm 44) . I was advised I had a thickened womb lining and to have a hysteroscopy. I was going to pay privately and get it done immediately but was £2500 but the gynae said based on my ultrasound it was ok to wait on the nhs as she felt it was non urgent. So I decided to wait and I had it done a week ago today.

I have severe health anxiety and it's honestly destroying me, I am struggling to sleep and eat or think about anything else

I wish I'd paid private a few months ago 😩 then if was good news I'd know by now and could have moved on. or if it wasn't I'd be being treated etc

I'm going away on holiday 2 weeks today and I can't even look forward to it. I mean imagine if I've still not had the results by then or worse if it's bad news . I'm just so scared.

Just want to reassure that I’ve had ultrasounds, hysteroscopies and a couple of endometrial biopsies as I’ve had weird bleeding a few times - it’s been either hormonal issues or polyps which were removed. This ranges from mid-20s to early 50s! I also have health anxiety and the waiting is the worst bit.

@janicegarvey
I am 99 per cent sure that you are absolutely fine based on other people's experiences

Have a wonderful holiday and hopefully a letter will be waiting for you at home with good news confirming that all is well x

janicegarvey · 14/02/2024 08:47

Just an update,

I rang them last Tuesday when on holiday as I'd had a missed call from an unknown number. So wanted to check if anyone had tried to call me. and the secretary said it wasn't them, but they’d had the results the previous Fri. but they don’t give them over the phone until the gynae consultant has looked at them. And gynae wasn’t back in work til last Wednesday. So I just thought I’ll wait and see

still heard nothing. Although post hasn't been today yet. So I’m hoping the fact I’ve still heard nothing is a good sign? As surely they would not just sit on bad results

It’s been 5 weeks today

I’m fairly sure it’s fine. But I’m annoyed with myself that I did not pay private months ago because then I’d not have had all this waiting . It would have been worth every penny.

@janicegarvey aw like you say I'm pretty sure if there was anything bad to report they would have contacted you by now! Hope you're doing ok 😘 xxx

Pushkinini · 14/02/2024 09:28

Similar to @LovelaceBiggWither, I had a biopsy in May 2020. I was called back urgently less than two weeks later as they had found cancer. As your results have taken so long, I think that's reassuring. Can you phone the hospital to follow up at all?

Pushkinini · 14/02/2024 09:29

Sorry op, just read your last post and see that you have phoned already. I think the admin wheels turn very slowly. When I was still under the care of the gynae it used to take weeks for my follow up letters after my phone consultations to come through.

Yeah I'll give it a week I think then call again if I've not heard anything

As I say, They did say no news was good news and at least I know they have the results. So it's not like they've been lost (hopefully!) and hopefully they would let me know if anything concerning was flagged

As a very anxious person though this has been horrible

A lot of private hospitals still use NHS lab/pathology services so you may still have had a wait. Certainly where I work they go in the same general pool (they’re not prioritised over NHS patients but seen alongside them in turn). Going private often gets the biopsy taken quicker but may not result in a quicker result (although this will have regional variation depending on how local services are set up).

At least you know the results are waiting and available, it may be the case that the consultant will go through them in a batch when they have their admin time so might not look at them straight away (it’s likely it’s another the longer the wait the better the news situation as they’ll triage the cases with significant findings first and need to work through contacting those patients, coming up with management plans etc before writing the letters for the benign results).

I think leaving it another week before chasing up is sensible.

Just a quick update

I still hadn't heard anything so I decided to make a drs appointment today as my anxiety has been through the Roof

But it’s good news. dr checked the system read the histology report, and relayed it back and assured me absolutely nothing untoward was found at all .

They actually had these results on Jan 26th . I am obviously massively relieved it is okay but tbh I’m really pissed off how long it’s taken to relay them to me. I mean if I hadn’t have gone drs today would they have even bothered ?? How hard would it have been to send a letter out

The dr was fab though we discussed my anxiety and I've been given sertraline. and been given an appointment for the mirena coil to be fitted as I'm on the mini pill at the moment and that can actually make anxiety worse.

I have also now decided to take out private healthcare cover because I can't go through anything like this again.

Hey
How long did it take in the end for your results ?
I had my womb biopsy 7weeks and 4days ago and now I'm actually starting to worry its not great. I called the secretary 2 weeks ago and she said it was still I. Progress?. (Not sure what that actually means).
I've had post coital spotting and spotting in between periods for 3 years. Scans and smears normal. But 4 gynae consultants later, they finally decided to do a biopsy. At first I wasn't worried but the fact it's been nearly 2 months, has me spooked. I'm 33 and now anxious as hell!!
Being Easter can't even call anyone until Tuesday.
Can't seem to ease this worry. Does it mean it's gonna be bad news because of the length of time...? 😪

MollyButton · 30/03/2024 15:50

The person up thread I had to check wasn't me.
They contact you very fast if there is anything nasty. The actually called me in during covid times, and I knew from how quickly they contacted me that it was nasty. I'd dealt with all my upset before they told me. But they did tell me it would take about 6 weeks to get the result when they did the biopsy.
It was all fine after the operation- and I've had my 3 years of check ups now.

I agree with this. I had a biopsy on a Wednesday and they called me to make an appointment to see the consultant on the Tuesday of the following week. I knew it wasn't good news then. This was at the height of the first covid lockdown too. Four years later and I'm fine.

Hi Emily

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's actually inhumane how they make people wait

In the end, I had not heard by about 7 weeks as well. My anxiety was through the roof and it was occupying my mind constantly, I made an appointment with my GP as I was honestly having panic attacks

I explained how anxious and worried I'd been and as I was talking he was tapping away at his PC, he said oh yeah they came back weeks ago it's all fine. Printed it out and showed it to me as well.

So they only took about 2 and a half weeks to come back. But no one told me. I had to go on holiday while not knowing if I had fucking cancer or not when they had the results sitting there. I cannot explain how angry I still am. A 5k holiday ruined and my mental health in tatters. Why could they not have contacted me? Even a quick txt to say it's come back normal or what ever.

Anyway what I'm trying to say is it is almost certain like 99.9% that you're absolutely fine

But I completely get how you've been feeling and I think it's disgusting how they've left you like this. Call the secretary again Tuesday or even your GP like I did FlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowers

It's awful isn't it. Actual torture. It's been on my mind for the last 2 weeks now and it's got me down in the dumps. I have 2 small children and my 3year old daughter is also awaiting an urgent hospital appointment so I feel like I'm on edge.

I'm so glad your results were OK. I'll definitely ring the secretary on Tuesday. I'll update you how I get on xxx😘

Called the gynae secretary this morn who said the results were back last week but as she isn't the secretary of the lady I saw, she will print them out and put them on her desk so she can do a results letter. How long that will take, I don't know.
Wondering if my GP can access them now they are available.
I told her I was concerned at the wait and she said there's a backlog. So hopefully this week, I'll know.
Xx

iloveshetlandponies · 02/04/2024 10:40

Oh @Emilyjayne33 😔

I'm sorry you've still not got answers

It is infuriating knowing that these admin people have results that are more than likely absolutely fine and cant relay them. I mean it's not their fault, they aren't doctors or medically trained

But it's just not fair, I hope you hear something very soon and you can relax

Keep in mind that if it was anything concerning they do always contact much quicker than this

Sending hugs x

YaMuvva · 02/04/2024 10:53

OP they took 2 weeks to get my my results, which were absolutely fine - it turns out they forgot to send the letter out! It’s only because I rang and chased that I got an answer.

I was told that if cancer was present they usually tell you pretty quickly if that helps

iloveshetlandponies · 09/04/2024 08:47

No...
Still waiting. It's been a week since I called the secretary. Fed up now. Its been 9 weeks.
Contemplating ringing again tomorrow if post man doesn't bring any letters today x

iloveshetlandponies · 09/04/2024 13:25

@Emilyjayne33 that is absolutely shocking!! I'd be ringing today! X
