Is this parking ticket a bit steep?

I've just received a parking ticket which I feel is a little tight. The ticket ran out at 20.42 and they've given me a ticket at 20.52, in their photos you can see me in the car at 20.53 and leaving the car park at 20.54. From the pictures they provided I think it must be a ticket warden instead of an automated camera. There was no option to pay by app which I usually do so I couldn't extend.

I'd paid for 2 hours parking which was £10 and have received a ticket for £100 - I was also surprised there was no discount offered for paying within 14 days as I thought this was standard. If it was £35 I'd just pay it as I was late but £100 seems really steep considering I had purchased a ticket and were just 11 minutes late.

Is it worth appealling or querying why there is no discount for paying early or should I just suck it up?

So you left 12 minutes late? You can ask as there's no early payment advantage but you don't have a leg to stand on!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 15/01/2024 16:54

The amount of time you were over is irrelevant but it is unusual not to offer an early payment discount. I doubt there is a legal requirement though as car parks are businesses so there's no laws over their fees. Do you have a picture of the parking fees sign to check it complies with that?

HeidiIeigh · 15/01/2024 16:56

I'd expect early discount. But I'm not shocked you have a ticket.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 15/01/2024 16:58

Actually there used to be a parking code of practice that regulated fees but it was withdrawn in 2022. You could try arguing that as best practice/goodwill they should still work to that.

Alloveragain3 · 15/01/2024 17:09

100 is really steep

I've always tried an appeal, as you never know.

A few weeks ago I got a ticket from a sainsburys car park as I didn't realise you needed to validate a ticket when shopping there.

They replied basically telling me they'd "let me off this once".

topnoddy · 15/01/2024 17:38

Where were you parked ?

Tinkerbyebye · 15/01/2024 17:40

You left late. Sorry you have to pay

closingdownsale · 15/01/2024 17:40

£100 is outrageous. I would definitely appeal but don't bother trying to appeal to their good nature, just try and kick up a fuss and hopefully you'll be a headache that they give you a 'discount'

Fionaville · 15/01/2024 17:51

£100 is a bloody cheek! There are groups set up on Facebook, specifically about different types of parking fines and how to appeal/reduce them. I'd have a look at some of them.

Legendairy · 15/01/2024 18:06

The parking companies are vile to deal with. I had an issue recently, basically received a fine 14 days after the letter was actually dated. £100 with discount down to £60 if paid within 14 days. I contacted them immediately to say I had just received the letter and that I would pay the £60 (for the 11 mins I went over, even though I was loading the car with music gear after a gig so was with the car in time just didnt leave the car park) but that there was no option as the letter had been received so late.

They ignored my emails then just started to threaten with legal action, very persistent and refused to discuss it even though i had all the proof of my correspondence. It was now £170. In the end they offered £130. I was so anxious by this point I paid it but I am still fuming about the whole thing but I had heard even if they don't take you to court you can end up with it on your credit record etc so I wasn't will to take that chance

It infuriates me, the charges are disproportionate and they are just horrendous to deal with.

GatherlyGal · 15/01/2024 18:09

I would write and complain OP. I think it's outrageous not to give you a few minutes grace.

Kwasi · 15/01/2024 18:20

I got a parking ticket last year for accidentally selecting Station Road car park on the app instead of Station car park. I appealed and sent a screenshot of my payment for Station Road along with an apology. My appeal was denied on the grounds of it being my mistake. I appealed again on the grounds that I couldn't have been in two places at once and I had paid for another of their car parks.

If that's not grounds to win an appeal, I would love to know what is.

SkulkHollow · 15/01/2024 18:24

Assuming the fine has been issued legally etc then suck it up and pay. You overstayed your time.

£100 is permissible.
There was talk of changing the charge cap from £100 to £50 but this was postponed

See the link below and then onwards to the link on challenges

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2022/02/private-car-parking-fines-cap-to-be-reduced-by-half-from-p100-to/

Note that the amount itself is not necessarily justification. If the correct signs etc are displayed and clear then the terms are enforceable in court
Consider their appeals process but be ready for being required to pay

RatatouillePie · 15/01/2024 18:51

11 minutes is almost 10% over, and 10% is an entire A Level boundary!

The £100 is really steep (did it warn you of the fine on signs?) but as you were quite a long way over then you are probably going to have to pay.

11 mins isn't that much over , they give you 10 mins grace apparently, I thought I was within that in my case, I wasnt carefully checking though as the last time I'd parked there it was a warden not the camera parking so if you havent already got a ticket you're good. I'd paid a bloody fortune for 6 hrs parking there also. I think £100 is ridiculous for 11 mins when I'd payed for 6 hrs.

I think the parking companies are ridiculous, I mean the council rip you off in any way they can where I live but parking fine is £25 if you pay within a specific time period bargain 😂
