To ask when the pain will stop?!

Posting for traffic so sorry in advance!

I cut my toenail last weekend, was quite sore Monday, Tuesday I decided to look closely and squeeze it and horrible gunk came out. It felt a lot better Wednesday but was still red on the side, Thursday it was sore to touch, so managed to get in with Nurse Prescriber today who looked and said there's an infection and has given me flucloxaxillin 4 a day for a week I think it is. Took the first one teatime so will have another before bed.

Just wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom or advice as it's really sore now! I'm laid in bed reading so my leg is elevated as it's on the bed, just wondered if there's anything I can put on or if it's best to leave alone.

How long will it take for the antibiotics to kick in and the pain/redness to go?

Sorry to sound a pain, I also have health anxiety massively which I'm on medication for. I'm trying my hardest this year to stop worrying and stressing about everything around my health so I don't want to fall into a Google rut - thought the lovely people on MN might have some advice for me

Take some painkillers to take the edge off?

ShoePalaver · 12/01/2024 19:48

Usually 24 hours for antibiotics to result in a noticeable improvement. Sometimes slightly longer. By tomorrow morning hopefully

ShoePalaver · 12/01/2024 19:49

You could bathe it in hot salty water

Do you have any magnesium paste? It's great for drawing out infection. I'm so sorry you're in so much pain.

Autumn1990 · 12/01/2024 20:02

I’d take some paracetamol and ibuprofen

Tinkerbyebye · 12/01/2024 20:04

It will take 24 hours or so for antibiotics to start kicking in. On the meantime just take some pain killers to help with the pain and focus on something else

WhatAFoolishFool · 12/01/2024 20:05

Took a few days for me to see the redness reducing but pain reduced within 24h

Oh thank you all so much for your replies, and so quickly too! I really appreciate them. I never even thought of painkillers, I'll give them a go. I was thinking about salty water helping so will have a go of that. Magnesium paste - I haven't got any in, but before Christmas I had an infected hair follicle and a friend of mine recommended it to me and said it draws out the infection. I'm not too sure how it works though?
