Aibu to need a hand hold applying for this job!

I'm having a crisis of confidence because I'm about to apply for a job I REALLY want and I'm so nervous and scared that I won't get it!

It's not extremely prestigious or specialised so I know in myself that I could definitely do it but I just need to convince them that I can over other, possibly more qualified candidates. It's also in a very male dominated industry and I'm worried they won't take me seriously 😞

Please help! 😂

Whats the job? Maybe someone here who does/had done the job can help with specifics?

But anyway, good luck, and go for it. Take your time on the application, point out how you meet the job spec/criteria and if possible get someone you trust to read the application before you send it.

I nearly pulled out of a job interview in October because the thought of not getting it was overwhelming. I hated the thought of going up against one of my colleagues. I was talked into it by my team and I was offered the job and started the following week. I am now earning so much more and to think that I nearly didn't go for it. Just do it, nothing to lose

@DeltaAlphaDelta79 it's quite a niche job in a local company so might be a bit outing! Essentially it's customer service that includes testing refurbished and reconditioned equipment before it gets sent out.

@lostinthoughts yes that's exactly it. I really, really want it, the job ticks all my boxes in terms of the changes I'm looking to make and I know it would help my life so much. So my hopes are definitely up and I hate that period of time where you are sitting around waiting for 'the call' which may never come 😭

But yes, only one way to know for sure!

Don’t stand in your own way! Apply and see what happens! All you can do is your best but don’t be telling yourself no before you’ve even given yourself a chance.

I was in a similar position before Christmas. Applied for a job I really wanted and really loved. Definitely thought I wasn’t going to get it and was a bag of nerves but I got it! I genuinely couldn’t believe it!

Now, go and try! You’ve got this!

twigolsenisabrat · 11/01/2024 21:19

Go for it - let them decide whether you can do it. Remember a man will have 30% of the required skills & still go for it. A woman will have 90% and still have doubts.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 11/01/2024 21:20

@thiscouldbeit fair enough. I have no experience of that, apart from generic customer service in the past. Good luck!!

theduchessofspork · 11/01/2024 21:24

Remember that men apply for jobs when 30% qualified and women only when 95% (or whatever) so don’t continue this trend.

If it’s male dominated they probably actively want to recruit more women

Figure out what they want and then list why you can do it. If you haven’t done a specific thing just give them the closest example and explain why it crosses over

Make yourself sound like the person who can solve their problems and will be fun to work with.

Aim to get it - but if you didn’t get it this time, they will remember a good candidate for the next gig. It’s always worth applying

That's an excellent point 😂

I really do have 90% of the required stuff! I think that the fact I'm female might go against me because there is some heavy lifting required and they might think I couldn't do it but I definitely can! I mean, if that is what they think I can't do much about it anyway.

Well, I've applied! Now I just have that horrible wait, honestly I'd rather them phone up tomorrow and say 'sorry it's a No' rather than nervously wait weeks for a response if I ever get one at all!

Still, it's done now. There's 120 other applicants though 😬 Fingers crossed they're all a bit rubbish 😂

I hope you get through to interview! Keep us posted and best of luck.

thiscouldbeit · 15/01/2024 19:27

I got a call! I have an interview set up for Monday morning 😁😁

Worth taking the time to polish my CV and write a cover letter because he said on the phone that a lot of people didn't bother so that made me stand out.

Fingers crossed!!🤞
