Sorry to post in aibu, but I need an answer to this, and hopefully quickly!

Got a new phone in June. Stupidly didn't back up my WhatsApp messages before setting up new phone (new network but transferred old phone number).

New phone only has messages from June. Old phone shows messages prior to June when I open the app, but pops up with a message about the number no longer being registered (or something) and I can't get past it to get to the messages.

Is there any way I can retrieve these old, non-backed up messages?! If I reactivate WhatsApp on my old phone, will I be able to access the old messages, or will they disappear as back up was obviously set to off?!

Did you keep the same number? If so then you need to back up the WhatsApp chats in your old phone and then they ‘should’ transfer over to the new one

Yes same number. But I can't get into WhatsApp to switch on back up on the old phone as it just pops up with a message to say the number is no longer registered to the phone (or something!)

I've had this recently and reactivated on my old phone and could see them all? Are you for example Samsung to Samsung? If so there's a button in there that says transfer chats to new phone and it gives you a qr code to transfer them. But then you'd prob lose from June onwards as there's been a gap.

Stick your new sim back in your old phone, activate the Google backup then transfer it back to new phone. It should all come up.

This is the message. Can I just log back in?

Will this work as it's a different network? Sorry, I'm totally clueless and too scared to f it up!

Amazing, thank you! I'm not too fussed if I lose June onwards as I can export the most important chats before I try it. Yes, it's Samsung to Samsung, but o2 to EE. Not sure if that makes a difference 🤷‍♀️

Hope you manage to get the messages back.
Could you ask advice at the EE phone shop.?

DeeIee · 10/01/2024 22:56

No as long as its samsung to Samsung it will let you do it. On the old phone, go into settings, chats, transfer chats and it will do Samsung to Samsung

Thank you. Do both phones need a sim card or phone number? My issue is the phone number is needed to get into the old phone WhatsApp, but can I transfer it to my new phone if that doesn't have a sim card/phone number registered to WhatsApp? As ultimately I will want my sim card back in my new phone.

I think I'm going to just have to export the most important chats from June onwards and email them to myself and then give it a go 😬

No they don't both need a sim. It's the original phone that needs the sim, it will then generate a qr code that you scan with the new phone. 1 sim card is fine as its designed for upgrading phones with only 1 sim, so technically the same position you're in now. Give it a try.
