I have a 3 year old who is Marvel obsessed! Mainly as he has books, toys etc. (plus his dad likes all marvel too)

i know he would be besotted with any spiderman film as well as the guardians of the galaxy (as he loves animals)

they are of course rated a 12A. I have watched them and I do think he would enjoy them and not be scared or anything. It would be a great family movie choice as everyone would enjoy!

but I am also feeling guilty that I’m being a totally inappropriate?

AIBU?

I am ready for the sh*t mum comments! 😅

What about easing him in with Spidey and his Amazing Friends (the TV show)?

rosettesforjill · 05/01/2024 17:49

I think he might find them a bit tricky to follow but my DS enjoyed the first Spiderverse film quite early!

BlouseyBrownMalone · 05/01/2024 17:49

I always looked on Common Sense Media.

Even if you have watched them all yourself it's still easy to forget or overlook parts that may be inappropriate.

LightSwerve · 05/01/2024 17:52

Completely inappropriate.

They are 12A.

You are skipping many happy toddler obsessions, making him out of line with his peers, to accelerate him to late primary films - why would you do that?

JingleSnowmanTree · 05/01/2024 17:55

He's 3, he's not a toddler.

i haven't seen the films in years. It's the kind of thing I wouldn't put on for a 3 year old, but equally wouldn't be bothered if Dad or an older sibling was watching them z& he was in the room.

now 19 year old when he was small loved all the shark & dinosaur stuff. Natural world type 'realistic' stuff, but cried his eye out at the animated stuff like Dinosaur Train & shark tales.

Theyre weird little monsters.

steff13 · 05/01/2024 17:55

I understand that it's rated 12A but I wouldn't let that rating override my own judgment as parent. If you've seen it and you think you would enjoy it let him watch it. He's four, he's unlikely to watch more than 20 minutes of it anyway.

museumum · 05/01/2024 18:01

I wouldn’t let a child that age see guardians of the galaxy three - it’s quite horrifying in content at times.

I’d go with this too.

DS is 3 and he’d get bored watching guardians of the galaxy or a Spider-Man film. But he loves a bit of spidey.

You could try I am Groot too.

cheddercherry · 05/01/2024 18:05

He’s probably not going to want to sit through them anyway, my DS (5) only now watches the spiderverse films but I have shown him clips from guardians he’s enjoyed (like the opening to the second one) and he mostly likes the battles of endgame and civil war etc where all the characters are but has zero interest in the adult dialogue- which I didn’t realise for “action” films how little action there actually is until he was saying “skip to the battles!” And I was mostly skipping the whole films!

There’s loads of marvel animated series on Disney +, like the Lego ones, a battleground animation and the spidey series he’d probably enjoy more at that age.

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 05/01/2024 18:07

There's so many great films for toddlers. Just stick with them just now.

Save marvel for when he's a bit older and can follow the plots. My kids loved them from about age 8/9.

Bboy1234 · 05/01/2024 18:11

My boys liked the old spiderman cartoons when they where younger and they both loved and still love Big Hero Six.

I think he would not really follow the plots, the films are quite long as well so he may get bored.

I would definitely not let any of my children watch GOTG3, the themes are horrific

FrostJack · 05/01/2024 18:12

I'd find a cartoon version of Avengers characters instead. Once you've opened that stable door, you can't get the horse back. They're 12A for a reason. When he's 12 he'll expect to be able to watch 18's, there's no point in setting yourself up for this as there are so many other alternatives.

LightSwerve · 05/01/2024 18:13

He's 3, he's not a toddler. Is there an official classification? I understood toddler to be 'under 4' so the years 1-3.

Anyway he's very young, too young for these films.

It'd be better for him developmentally and socially to watch things targeted at his age.

ReadtheReviews · 05/01/2024 18:13

Guardian of the Galaxy 2 avoid at all costs! It's dark as fuck. None of the humour. All about animal testing really.

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 05/01/2024 18:14

Mine are 4 and are obsessed with Little Shop of Horrors.

I fast forward through swears and gore, they just love the music and think the plant is brilliant.

They also like Jumanji.

ReadtheReviews · 05/01/2024 18:14

Oh, 3 not 2 according to a pp.

MadCatLady27 · 05/01/2024 18:24

I don't have children so can't advise, however would the monsters frighten him? The special effects are generally very good so they look very real as a child who once turned the TV on to the awful moonmins episode where the groke comes to the house and they try to get it to go away and I had to ask for it to be turned off as it scared me so much

I refused to watch guardians of the galaxy 3, as I'd heard such awful things about the animal abuse, and I love bunnies and know there's one in it 😭

BingoMarieHeeler · 05/01/2024 18:25

@JingleSnowmanTree who made you queen of toddler classification? 😄

OP I would not skip to those movies tbh. So many nice more appropriate movies to enjoy first.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/01/2024 18:36

My DS is 5 & we haven't let him watch the main films yet.
He has watched & enjoyed Spidey & his Amazing Friends; I am Groot; The Spiderverse films (though he couldn't really follow the complexities of the plot) & the GoTG Holiday special (theres nothing dark or scary in that one).
