To find this terribly sexist?

K

I am doing some work whilst watching an old Christmas edition of Top of the Pops from the 1970s. Here we have Father Christmas in his glitter outfit (I think he's quite cool actually) and Santa's little helpers all ready to do his bidding in satin knickers. It makes my blood boil. Is it 'of its time' or was it sexist then? I would say so.

Wait until you see Benny Hill !

Thedogscollar · 04/01/2024 22:20

It wasn't right but it's of it's time.

It wasn't right but it's of it's time.

Actually scrap that as I'm thinking nothing has really changed since those days 😕

dieselKiller · 04/01/2024 22:34

Do you remember the classic Christmas story about Santa and his sexy reindeer? No, me neither. People knew this was bullshit in the 70s too.

jay55 · 05/01/2024 10:18

Pan's people were on TOTP every week, women dancing in tight or revealing clothes for men's titillation.

WandaWonder · 05/01/2024 10:23

Something was sexist over 40 years ago? Call the papers why weren't we told!

This is genuinely news to you?

Haydenn · 05/01/2024 10:25

I don’t think the outfits are any more risqué than you would see many female singers wearing now? It is possibly the subservient nature of the dancing that makes it off its time? But then the incredibly sexually explicit dance moves that you see now are in my mind more degrading.

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 05/01/2024 10:32

Have you seen any music videos in the last 50 years? Or concerts?

NeedToChangeName · 05/01/2024 10:35

I think it's horrible

But, on a Saturday night, you see young women in skimpy outfits while men are fully clothed. So, I'm not sure much has changed

araiwa · 05/01/2024 10:56

Twas ever thus

Not many female celebrities you haven't seen 95% of their body

Falkenburg · 05/01/2024 11:01

And yet the lead singer of the The Runaways 16 year old Cherie was loved by feminists!

What do you think of this?

ManateeFair · 05/01/2024 12:07

Is this literally the first time you've ever seen anything from the 70s?

LakeTiticaca · 05/01/2024 12:16

Have you not noticed the way young girls dress these days? Tight leggings right up their bum crack and camel toe at the front? They might as well go out completely naked since you can virtually see everything.

Makes Pans People look positively nun-like 🤣

TempleOfBloom · 05/01/2024 12:17

It was both of its time AND incredibly sexist.

As the women’s liberation movement of the time was working hard to point out.

jay55 · 05/01/2024 10:18

Don’t watch Kenny Everett and Hot Gossip then, you’ll have a seizure. 😄

jay55 · 05/01/2024 12:33

Have a seizure? Over knowing this wasn't a one off but happened every week?

BethDuttonsTwin · 05/01/2024 12:37

Yet more moaning and judgment of historical social norms by current standards. How dreary.

Good points about the Kardashians et al and hold much of their bodies they routinely display. See also glammed up girls on your average city weekend night out. Maybe pop out and give them a telling off?

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 05/01/2024 13:13

I also think some of these displays and performances aren’t just for the men. Women enjoy it too and sex sells.

Some of today’s performances are way more provocative with dance routines and costumes representing bondage and sex positions.

Falkenburg · 05/01/2024 13:19

The whole family could watch Top of The Pops and see Pans People and Legs and Co.

To day we have Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, J Lo, Lizzo who are far more sexually graphic and I wouldn't say they are suitable for family viewing.

beguilingeyes · 05/01/2024 13:34

In some ways it's a lot worse now. Does anyone remember Tiffany? I think We're Alone Now was the big hit. She used to show up on TOTP in baggy jumpers. I can't imagine any girl singer getting away with that now. She'd be styled to within an inch of her life. And they have to be stunning. Elbow and Ed Sheeran can look like a bag of spanners and be huge. No woman who wasn't gorgeous would get a record deal these days.

Many female performers still wear very revealing clothing, it's just that they're often considered to have more choice in the matter nowadays - I'm not 100% convinced that's true though.
