AIBU to wish people HNY before 1st January?

I wished a passerby Happy New Year after a brief discussion instead of saying goodbye. It got me thinking, would most people consider that weird to say before the NY?

People obviously say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year...but it still felt a bit odd as it left my mouth 😆.

YNBU. A cashier wished me a happy new year today as I left and it made me smile.

It's not weird at all once Christmas has passed.

I think it's fine, I just said it at the end of a text, as in 'I hope you have a Happy New Year!'

“hope you a happy new year”

is that i’ve been saying

AhBiscuits · 30/12/2023 16:59

I say it to people I won't see until after NY.

Yes, I guess this would have felt more natural.

I say Happy Christmas until 1st January when I swap to HNY. Christmas lasts for 12 days after all!
