To think this gateau is ok to eat?

I took a frozen chocolate gateau out of the freezer about 2 days ago and put it in the fridge (still in its cardboard packaging).

Today, me, DH and the children ate it.

My mum is stressing as she says it should have been eaten within 24 hours of coming out of the freezer and we are now at risk of food poisoning???

I checked the box and it does say to eat within 24 hours….

Is that guideline true or is it just companies covering their backs??

It’s fine. I’ve never noticed that warning about the 24 hours. It’s been in the fridge, no danger.
Not that cake lasts more than 24 hours here… (but that’s beside the point)

DuploTrain · 30/12/2023 15:16

If it’s been in the fridge it’s absolutely fine.

ManateeFair · 30/12/2023 15:16

Oh, your mother is being ridiculous. It’s fine.

Clarich007 · 30/12/2023 15:19

No problem. You defrosted it in the fridge
I would definitely have eaten that.Hope you enjoyed it 😁

I put a frozen gateau in the fridge on Boxing Day and finished it last night. I'm still alive and not ill.

poppy1973 · 30/12/2023 15:27

It will be fine

pigsDOfly · 30/12/2023 15:28

I rather suspect the 24 hour thing is standard as far as the manufacturers are concerned.

I wouldn't take fish that I'd frozen out of the freezer and eat it two days later but this is a cake.

It wouldn't worry me, I'd be more than happy to eat it.

Peachtails · 30/12/2023 15:29

24 hrs after fully defrosting I would have thought, not 24 hrs from out the freezer? You'll be fine 🙂.

Ohnotyoutoo · 30/12/2023 15:30

I'd eat it!

chocolateaupain · 30/12/2023 15:30

I'm incredibly careful about food safety guidelines and I'd have eaten it without a second thought!

AhBiscuits · 30/12/2023 15:33

100% fine. Your mum is panicking for no reason.

Ah frozen gateau...that takes me back to Christmas at my Nan's - she would get a Sara Lee double chocolate one and a Black Forest 😋

mrsbyers · 30/12/2023 15:43

companies like brake bros provide frozen cakes for pubs and restaurants which will def not be consumed within 24hrs - you’ll be fine

JingleSnowmanTree · 30/12/2023 15:48

I have a fairly easily upset stomach & I hate vomiting, especially living alone. So I'm very careful. I always figure I'd rather 'waste' something the first time around rather than eat it then vomit it up.

I'd eat that if it had been in the fridge.

WashItTomorrow · 30/12/2023 15:52

I’d eat it without a thought.

MinervatheGreat · 30/12/2023 15:56

Your mum is over cautious.
From what you say, it will be absolutely yummy.

Manufacturers have to cover their backs but if it smelled ok, tastes ok, enjoy it!

maddiemookins16mum · 30/12/2023 16:24

I’ve had a frozen (well now defrosted) cheesecake in the fridge since Wed eve. Having it tonight.

VisionsOfSplendour · 30/12/2023 16:37

What does she think will have happened to it?

Food waste is crazy because of some peoples ridiculous views

BCBird · 30/12/2023 16:39

I'd eat it

2024BigWhoop · 30/12/2023 17:21

It was absolutely delicious!!!!!

We are all still alive 😂

There’s a little bit of it left so I’ll wait for the children to go to bed and then I will finish it off 😂
