Sick of friend one upping me?

A couple of years ago I got a new car and friend then went and bought a new car just a month or so later. I put my house on the market and she did the same. I shrugged it off as these being common things everyone in life does.

I recently got a new job and finally have a bit more money to get another new car (other car was now very old and kept breaking down). I went for dinner last week with friends (including this friend) and she noticed I had a new car - I mentioned to someone at dinner about me viewing a house as I knew she used to live around there so I wanted her opinion.

Today I’ve met up with my friend and all she’s talked about is getting a new car and planning to move to a new house.

The only person I compete with is myself. I just want to do better than “old me”. But I do find it quite odd that she seemingly can’t stand me being the friend who has a better car/house/job etc

I'd say your choices are either

1 stop telling her things
2 don't let it bother you
3 start telling her lies like Colleen Rooney.

Very extreme if you really think she’s the money to buy cars and houses just to copy uou.

How did you buy a new car 2 years ago but now it's very old?

ZekeZeke · 28/12/2023 08:52

I imagine the house move is coincidence m, it's too big a decision for simple one-upmanship.

Presumably they mean new to them not a brand new car.

I can believe this because my DM has a friend who does this and buys exactly the same model car, exactly the same holidays, exactly the same shoes, makeup. Everything 😂 not even subtle about it. I don't know how she puts up with it. I'd be like 'wow that's so strange' with my mouth hanging open for effect every time she starts on about the latest copying episode but she lets her get on with it. Batshit!

I can't imagine not being able to work things like this out! It must be exhausting.

Oh they can work it out.
They just think it's hilarious to be so pedantic.

Which of course it isn't.

Well first time I shrugged it off but now I’m not sure.

But yes it does seem like she can’t stand for me to have anything she classes as “better”. And within a week(ish) of her finding out I have a new car and I’m looking at a new house she is now speaking of getting a new car and house - despite having just had work done on her house.
