People spreading the joy (Christmas illnesses)

I'm sat here feeling miserable thanks to a bad cold I am almost 100% sure I have caught off my DP's step-mother who came round a few days ago with DP's Dad to drop off presents sporting a horrendous cold. She proceeded to sit there coughing and sneezing whilst complaining bitterly about how ill she was. Why was she even visiting people in that state? I tried my tactful best to suggest that they don't stay for long in case others caught it but that fell on deaf ears.

I'm now ill, a couple of the kids are ill, a family friend who was there at the time is ill, my mum is ill (and has cut her visit to us short because of it).

DP's step-mother has completely failed to acknowledge her role in spreading this illness and wrecking a number of Christmas plans despite being told by DP. Apparently DP's dad said that she absolutely insisted on coming round with him.

AIBU for wondering why are some people so utterly selfish?

I'm poorly and grumpy and the Christmas chocolate is not curing it! Lemsip is just about taking the edge off.

I’m sorry you’re not well.

Part of the reason we have Christmas when we do is it’s such a dark, miserable time of year. It’s exactly when everyone gets ill - everyone’s run out of juice.

I don't think the reason for Christmas is so we can all be ill together over some bank holidays, tbh.

So tired of these posts.

Your health isn't the responsibility of others really. If you were that bothered you could have asked her to leave. Suck it up & accept that seasonal viruses exist

Allfur · 27/12/2023 15:24

There have been lots of bugs going around, part of winter - try strengthening your immune system

Try not getting a viral illness passed to you. Top advice 👌

I'm ill - started Christmas Eve. I'm fed up that my much needed break is now spent recovering from illness. I've not slept for 3 nights. It's poop.

I basically did in as strong a way as I could without causing a major diplomatic incident and was ignored.

How about people don't go around in social settings when suffering from communicable diseases?

Also, completely disagree that people don't have any responsibility for the health and wellbeing of others.

It’s so shitty when people do this. I had a family member bring me Covid the weekend before Xmas which utterly wrecked plans.

Just don’t come!

My immune system is fine. Fully up-to-date with my jabs and in good nick. Still didn't help me when someone decided to come and share their illness with me though nor the other 4+ people impacted.

Exactly. I mean it is one thing to get ill over the Christmas but it is entirely another to go round visiting other people when clearly ill and symptomatic. Just stay home!

So sorry OP. I came down yesterday with a streaming cold/cough/fever, I just feel awful. It's only a couple of weeks since the last virus I had. That one was picked up at the school where I work, no idea where this one came from unless it was shopping on the 23rd.

Seems an awful waste of Christmas holidays to be lying around sneezing and coughing and generally feeling awful.

Hope you feel better soon.

Totally agree. 👍

BigHoops · 27/12/2023 16:04

Sympathy OP. I tested positive for covid on Christmas Eve and I feel absolutely rotten with it. Just when I think I might be getting better, another fun symptom appears. Right now it's achy limbs and nausea when I eat - even though I still have an appetite. It's so shit and it being Christmas makes it worse.

I haven't done a covid test in ages btw, only did it because we had lots of plans to see people and I wanted to be responsible. Yes, you don't always know when you are infectious but if you are feeling ill at this time of the year, surely it is best to stay away until you recover!

I am so sick of lemsip now 😂

Zanatdy · 27/12/2023 16:06

My 19yr old is sick so like a normal person does I text my friend who was due to come for Christmas lunch and warned her. She has her own business and won’t get sick pay and she doesn’t want to be sick. Surely that’s what normal people do?

SeulementUneFois · 27/12/2023 16:10

Agree with you OP!

Saying that, did she know your DP when he was a kid/teenager - might she have been getting him back for times he'd gotten her sick & spoilt occasions then?
