To ask you to help me identify where this storyline comes from? Book/film etc. Racking my brains!

Just remembered a random storyline from somewhere - and I can’t think where it’s from. The bit I remember is… a guy is remembering bits of his childhood, which involve some memories that are traumatic for him. One of the childhood memories he has is that he killed his family dog, but he subsequently finds out that he killed a family member (one of his younger sisters).

Sorry for this random and probably quite depressing thread! I just randomly remembered the plot line, but can’t think where it comes from e.g. book, film, TV series. Can anyone help to identify it please? Thanks.

Sherlock TV series

PinkFrogss · 26/12/2023 01:08

The final episode of Sherlock.

Unforgettably terrible!

SilverRingahBells · 26/12/2023 01:12

You might possibly be mixing it up with the storyline from season 4 of Sherlock where he remembers Redbeard as his childhood dog who was put down, but in fact it was a childhood friend murdered by his psychopath sister.

Pupsandturtles · 26/12/2023 01:52

I remember this too but I haven’t watched Sherlock!

SpursFan2 · 26/12/2023 18:09

Thanks everyone! It could definitely be Sherlock. I wonder if it could also be from something else too, as PupsandTurtles also remembers it but hasn’t seen Sherlock. Could it be a storyline from anything else as well, maybe?

The Butterfly Effect?
It has some kinda similar bits in it.

There was also that Nicole Kidman/Hugh Grant series “the undoing” where Hugh told a story how he left the apartment door open and the family dog got out and died as a explanation as to why he was estranged from his family but it was a lie and he had let his little sister run out of the house and into the road and be killed when he was supposed to be looking after her.

Oh yes! I’m remembering the Undoing!

Not sure how helpful this will be as my memory is vague, don’t remember the book title or author - but here goes. Three sons live in a house by a lake with their parents. Woods nearby. One day in the woods the boys come across something like an electricity substation, the youngest boy is (not fatally) electrocuted. He is holding his mother’s beloved dog who dies. Years later the boys reunite for their mother’s birthday. She is maybe in a care home? Alcoholic? They have a kitten as a gift for their mother and one son suggests naming it after the dead dog. Chaos ensues and it is revealed that the dog was actually the boys’ young sister, and the son has suppressed the memory. Think it may have been Scandinavian?

Ahh yes it was The Undoing - thanks @Allywill! Knew Mumsnet would come up with the answer! Thank you 😊

That book sounds interesting @RedBullBlood - wonder if anyone else on here will know what it’s called?
