AIBU to ask if Porto is a good holiday destination?

We are watching the pennies this year and were hoping to choose a cheaper holiday destination this year. We are a family of four with grown up kids aged 20 and 23. We enjoy visiting historical places.
Has anyone been to Porto? Considering this as a holiday destination, travelling to Douro Valley, Guimaraes and Braga.

I know a family who moved out there and absolutely love it, and while I haven’t been that far up, fhe coast north of Lisbon is gorgeous. I love the sound of the holiday you have planned!

Oh yes it’s a wonderful destination! Guimarães & Braga are both fab too.

I know it’s touristy but you must do a tour of one of the Port producers - so interesting plus free port 😁 also Livaria Leilo bookshop https://www.livrarialello.pt/en/staircase

its a great city fir walking though steep so good shoes! Also as it’s that far north it’s generally a bit closer to british weather than in the south so layers!

Staircase

The single most emblematic feature of Livraria Lello takes centre stage inside: the iconic staircase.

Absolutely fantastic place to spend time. DH and I went for a few days earlier this year and it was great. We are massive foodies and there are some amazing places to eat.
Would thoroughly recommend it!

One of mine and DH's favourite holiday destinations - much more relaxed than Lisbon and a nice arts scene there. Perfect for a chilled holiday or short break. Would kill to go back soon!

Also depending how long you’re there is just over an hour to Coimbra on the train which is also well worth a visit with one of the worlds oldest universities

DH and I had a long weekend in Porto - it was gorgeous. Really lovely vibe and cheap for eating out. Bring your walking shoes though, its a river in the middle and steeply banked sides.
We want to go back and stay longer to explore the surrounding areas.

Yes! We took 4 kids in October half term and they all loved it. Weather was mixed sunny and rainy. So much to do, easy to get around, cheap, friendly. Lovely!

SallyWD · 23/12/2023 09:03

It's an absolutely wonderful place. I love it. If you were there for a week or two you'd need to explore the surrounding areas too as its not a huge city.

Adding to the general consensus that Porto is fab..we combined it with a few days in a quinta in Pinhao (in the Douro valley) which was really lovely. The train journey along the river is beautiful. Highly recommend!
