Does anyone actually have a hair of the dog as a hangover fix?

How on earth? How does it not make everything dramatically worse?

I'm not sure I could sip alcoholic anything when I have a hangover without puking or passing out.

Are there people out there who do this in real life?

I have back in the good old days pre DC. Lie in after a night out then lunch at the pub with a cider, usually sorted me out if the hangover was of the ‘feel off but can still leave the house’ territory. Depends how bad your hangovers are I guess! I was a wine drinker on a night out though so wasn’t returning to the same drink - a wine at lunch would have definitely been a bad call I think. Spirits I’ve generally avoided since uni as they were usually the source of the room spinning/puking hangovers!

Hydrate with Water!!

A hangover had alot to do with dehydration

Bertiesmum3 · 20/12/2023 19:49

Yep!
they say have a hair of the dog that bit you

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 20/12/2023 19:49

Oof. Maybe much later in the day. But a red bull and a pasty or a sausage roll do wonders.

cbbo · 20/12/2023 19:49

Ooh yeah a Bloody Mary or half a cider and black, and I'm happy again haha

ErmWhatever · 20/12/2023 19:50

If you can stomach it enough to get it down your neck and keep it down, it does work.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 20/12/2023 19:50

Heck, no. If I'm hung over I am usually of the mind never even to look at alcohol for the rest of eternity and beyond.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/12/2023 19:51

It definitely works!

Grandmasswag · 20/12/2023 19:52

No! Although once at a wedding we’d all got massively pissed the night before and the champs at lunchtime definitely cured us all. So I believe it probably works. I think that’s basically how alcoholism develops.

TheChosenTwo · 20/12/2023 19:53

I’ve never tried it, even the thought of it makes me feel worse!

loverrr · 20/12/2023 19:53

Yep, a beer usually sorts me out

harriettenightingale · 20/12/2023 19:55

It works for a while if you keep drinking, then you pay for it with a worse hangover later.

Ortila · 20/12/2023 19:55

I did when I was younger and weekends were just long parties punctuated by erratic points of sleep. Bloody Mary and eggs Benedict used to do the trick.

It helps because you top up your alcohol levels. So you're basically pissed again. So you don't notice/care about feeling bad.

I think I'd probably die if I pulled that sort of stunt now.

moderationincludingmoderation · 20/12/2023 20:00

HOTD always been the ticket for me but I think it helps that I like lager.

A good fry up or bacon sarnie, and A light crisp half of lager usually gets me back on track.. but it's a dangerous avenue as you can't stop at one as the hangover creeps back!
So I put it off as long as possible and then stick to just a few more halfs, a bowl of soag bol, then an early night, back to normal the next day ideally!

My friends who dont drink beer/ciderusually cant face a HOTD.

Jeannie88 · 20/12/2023 20:02

Never used to but now if feeling crap then yes a hair of dog and less than u drank the night before lol 😆 Also lots of water during day til u can do this. X

MolkosTeenageAngst · 20/12/2023 20:02

Not my usual hangover cure but I have done it when at a festival or a boozy weekend away etc where I was going to be drinking two nights in a row. It does work but I’ve never stopped after just one so inevitably end up with double the hangover the morning after the second night.

kitsuneghost · 20/12/2023 20:03

I think it applies more to alcoholics that need alcohol to function.

Wakemeupwhenlifestarts · 20/12/2023 20:06

Pre child I’d definitely wake up and have a beer. Not saying I would drink all day, but a few throughout the day made me feel much better.

Upsadiddles · 20/12/2023 20:31

Vodka is the ultimate hangover cure. It’s saved me on hen weekends etc in the past, and more recently got me through a whole family sunday pub lunch the day after the work christmas party (it just takes the one, didn’t sit and get pissed with great Aunty Maureen). I wouldn’t do it if I was just sat at home the next day though. Then it would just be a shower, plenty of water and dragging myself out for some fresh air. I very rarely have hangovers now I have DC, but when I do have a night out I feel far far worse than I ever used to despite drinking far less.

RallySooney · 20/12/2023 21:34

You need to feed a hangover. Pickled onion Monster Munch is my ultimate cure of choice.

Haribosweets · 20/12/2023 21:44

Back in the day I did - early 20s. Clubbing til 3am on a Friday night with my girly friends then at the local with my husband and his friends at 12pm Saturday lunch! First drink would take about 1.5 hours to stomach and then it was easy and a full day and night of drinking. Sunday was a write off though! Couldn't do it now though

Missingmyusername · 20/12/2023 21:44

Yes once or twice, you are basically drunk again. Hen parties, weddings where you just have to get on with it the next day.
Can’t be good for you! I certainly wouldn’t do it now.

pazwaz70 · 20/12/2023 21:46

Alka seltzer,swear by it.

gamerchick · 20/12/2023 21:47

It just puts off the hangover, it doesn't cure it.

Sparklfairy · 20/12/2023 21:48

You fire up your liver again, which is why it works. I saw it on a show like brainiac or something.
