It'll be fine if it's been properly refrigerated

HippeePrincess · 18/12/2023 10:21

No I’d take it back with the receipt of course.

CasperGutman · 18/12/2023 10:32

Isn't it a 'use by' date on mince, not 'best before'?

On what basis would you expect a refund? It was okay to use when bought, and was labelled with the date so the shelf life would have been clear to the purchaser.

Id open and cook it now - subject to looking and smelling ok.
Then freeze.

That’s not what the op states, it states it was use by was before the date she bought it? So if it was already out of date I’d return it, because legally they can’t sell past the use by date. I don’t always check dates if I’m in a rush and if don’t expect them to be past their date on the day you purchase.

It is what the OP states, it’s just how you’re reading it.

The OP says "it was best before that date". I take this to mean that the "Best Before" date was "that date", i.e., 16th December when the purchase was made.

I suppose grammatically speaking "best before" would suggest it needs to be used literally "before" that date, but I've always taken them to be inclusive (and anyway a best before date is guidance as to best quality, not a food safety issue). The product in question would have a "use by" date as already established, which I would say is grammatically inclusive of the printed date.

Those dates are conservative by at least a week. Its all a scam to create waste and make you buy more. Just eat it.

Marshtit · 18/12/2023 14:31

i made a mistake @CasperGutman due to putting the packet in the freezer, it was USE by
anyway, cooking now,
