AIBU to not understand the appeal of a cheeseboard?

I like some cheeses, cheddar, feta, mozzarella, halloumi and emmental for example but usually melted or as part of a dish. I don’t really understand the appeal of eating big pieces of cheese and I can’t stand brie or blue cheese.

Yet people positively go into raptures over cheese. It seems to be a positive obsession with some. A friend is incredulous at my relative indifference over cheese and wanted to give me an expensive cheeseboard so I could share her obsession but though incredibly kind of her it’d be wasted on me.

I’m a big believer in each to their own but I wonder what it is about cheese in particular that makes so many people positively evangelical about it?

@CranfordScones
have you bought the 5 years old vintage Cornish cheddar, just In ? It’s spectacular
I have stocked up

FUPAgirl · 16/12/2023 14:22

I actually think your friend is strange for pushing this to the point of insisting on buying you something you don't like. My SIL is exactly the same about wine, cheese and even holiday locations 🤣 she just can't seem to accept that some people don't like stuff that she likes.

It’s the taste 👅

kitsuneghost · 16/12/2023 14:28

I love cheese. Can quite happily sit and eat a chunk of nice cheese.
But YANBU. most generic cheeseboards have a selection of the blandest cheeses you can find. Brie, emmental, edam, Danish blue, white Stilton with cranberries etc... all sat out in a warm house on a back table until they are sweaty and tacky.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 16/12/2023 14:30

It's just...amazing.
Cheese on toast,
Cheese and mushrooms,
Cheesy garlic bread,
Cheese on pasta,
Cheese on crackers with chutney,
Melted camembert and brie with crunchy bread.
The only Cheese on the cheesboard I am not keen on is the blue Cheese I give that to my mom she loves it.

LoreleiG · 16/12/2023 14:32

Ooh, you’ve reminded me to add a cheese board to my food delivery.

Pushkinini · 16/12/2023 14:36

A cheese board is one of the best bits about Christmas. A nice squidgy Brie, tangy Stilton, Boursin and a Cheddar is my idea of heaven.

AgnesX · 16/12/2023 14:43

Cheese especially the niffy stuff with a glass of port and biscuits....yum

Celery and stilton soup (and a dry white wine)

Baked brie and bread....wine too ..

What's not to like!

You wash your mouth out OP.

With cheese 😂

Beautiful3 · 16/12/2023 14:56

Some people don't get chocolate, they love the cheese! I used to buy a cheese board every Christmas, but stopped last year. Because we were only eating the cheddar and red leciester! It seemed like such a waste of money for us!

19lottie82 · 16/12/2023 14:57

It’s cheese, LOTS OF CHEESE

Poorlymumma · 16/12/2023 14:59

I look forward to a cheeseboard more than Christmas dinner.

pinkspeakers · 16/12/2023 14:59

Cheese is the best thing. It is probably the food I would find hardest to give up. I like all sorts of cheeses in all sorts of everyday uses. But the chance to graze at will on a interesting selection of really good cheeses, with a few simple biscuits, some celery and grapes, a bit of chutney, quince past is the very best best thing of all.

But who was talking about naff generic cheeseboards??

CoatOfArms · 16/12/2023 15:01

I don't eat cheese any more since I was told my cholesterol was too high. Don't miss it a bit, to be honest.

People who actively choose cheese instead of a sweet dessert are just weird. Cheese and crackers is OK for lunch on a bog standard Tuesday or something, but as a special treat? Nah.

EliosBackPack · 16/12/2023 15:04

Like a lot of the posters - cheese and more cheese!
Stilton is the best cheese in the world, love all the blue ones.

TheCadoganArms · 16/12/2023 15:09

Most UK cheese boards are staggeringly bland which is odd given some of the great British cheeses out there. Give me some uber ripe Epoisses or Roquefort that has become self aware and is actively crawling across the board any day of the week.

Zoreos · 16/12/2023 15:12

Cheese is absolutely glorious and 100% my favourite single food item. I’m actually addicted. I cannot comprehend how anyone can’t not love it, although I’m perfectly aware that many don’t. But imo YADBU. Sorry.

I have lots of friends who froth at the mouth at the thought of expensive chocolates, afternoon tea with millions of cakes, artisan breads or syrupy flavoured coffees. I don't see how enjoying a range of cheese is much different really.

They get angry at the thought of those foods? 😳

Love, love, love cheese.
Salivates like Homer Simpson thinking about beer.....

I love cheese and would happily eat a cheeseboard every day. I absolutely hate sweet food and can’t bear cake/ice cream/chocolate. The different flavors of cheese are amazing and the stronger the better for me, especially paired with a nice Italian red wine. We’re all different, and for me cheese is my treat in the same way sweet food is for others

Surely that would be the cheese on the board? Not the actual board?

StaunchMomma · 16/12/2023 15:19

If you're a big believer in each to their own, why are you so confused that some people love cheese?

All of the cheese you like are of a similar mild taste and texture. You're clearly just not a cheese person.

I love all cheeses and the reason people look forward to cheese boards is because they are usually only eaten as a treat, not as standard.

I personally hate Christmas pudding but I'm not confused about why others love it - they just have different taste buds to me.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/12/2023 15:19

YABU.

Mmmmm cheese.

My ideal cheeseboard features a strong cheddar (one of those with little crystals in- is it salt?), some Port Salut, a creamy blue like Dolcelatte, probably some Brie, goats cheese and maybe a little Bavarian smoked. And then we need crackers, butter, chutney and some cornichons. Glass of port if you’re that way inclined.

Sorry, what was the question again?
