Hi all. Posting in AIBU for traffic. I am really concerned, I emailed Very (Shop Direct) for a subject access request. Im currently going through the Ombudsman re a complaint with Very anyway, and wanted all information they hold on me. For context, my Very account was closed in 2019. The SAR response includes a copy of my October bank statement. This is a personal bank account and I have no idea how they have accessed my bank statement. I believe this is a huge GDPR breach, what right do Very have to access my own bank account? Am i being unreasonable or is this something they are able to do??

Sorry it includes a copy of my October 2023 bank statement.

Yes I would be concerned on this. They have no right to access your bank statements without permission. Contact your bank and ask them to explain it either via a SAR or just ask them what authorisation they had for releasing this

If you had a credit account with them of any sort then they will get a report from a Credit Reference Agency which can include your current account transaction history. You authorised this when you opened the account.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/12/2023 11:31

I didn't think it was that detailed, just what is on your credit file, ie overdraft balance if you have one.

Pushkinini · 16/12/2023 11:41

That sounds very wrong. If your account was closed in 2019, why on earth would they need a statement from October 2023? I'd be contacting my bank and Very for a very full explanation.

LetMeGoogleThat · 16/12/2023 12:35

That's all kinds of wrong under GDPR, contact the ICO and raise a complaint ico.org.uk/

Thanks all. It is literally my full October bank statement showing my salary, debits to my other bank accounts and all transactions. When Ive made transfers to my mum and partner for food and odds and ends etc they have blacked out their names. I know they are able to access a copy of my credit report, however my experian credit report doesn't include any basic transactions or statements from my bank 😕

Do you owe them money? Did you open a credit line with them? Are you saying that you can't afford to pay them because you've got no money? What did you agree to when you signed the contract with them?

ElleC90 · 16/12/2023 13:07

No this was just a simple subject access request for the information they hold on my account. I would maybe understand if the bank statement they had was from when I opened the account but its been closed for almost 4 years. Doesn't make sense for them to have my bank account statement from this year. I will need to have a look at the original contract they have sent.
