I have cancer and one of my side effects from my immunotherapy is essentially crohns. I've been told the likelihood of this resolving is minimal, as my treatment involves getting my bodies immune system to attack cancer cells and it's a recognised side effect of immunotherapy that you can get colitis.

I'm now on a biological medication for it.

Anyway!! I'm an nhs admin assistant and I work in a very small team (lovely) where in our office we have our room, kitchen, another office and managers office. Our toilet facilities are outside of our office across a patient corridor , outside, past the gym and then in the physio unit. It's about a 5 minute walk.

I do not get much notice that I need to go to the loo and it is so much worse after I've eaten so I've either been having my lunch at my desk and then using my entire lunch hour to use the loo or just not eating at work which is horrible because it's so depressing.

I've been losing weight quite rapidly since being back at work because it's just so shit (literally) I can't see any way around around it though :( I can't move offices because the phone number for the office is obviously important!

I don't even know what I'm hoping for? A fucking miracle maybe!

Can you speak to HR/occupational health?
I wouldn’t have thought it would be difficult to port a phone number to a different desk if that’s the only thing keeping you tied to an office that isn’t appropriate for your needs?

Yup. Ask your manager to refer you to occ health. The bathroom proximity thing is a reasonable adjustment for your condition which could be classed as a disability under the equality act

It is very easy to port phone numbers. Please don't worry about that. Speak to OH as pp suggested. This is very easy to sort out.

A colleague had the same problem during cancer treatment and moved into our offices for a bit, as others have said ask to be moved.

Nagado · 14/12/2023 05:17

It’s a reasonable adjustment and very easily done. There’s no reason they can’t accommodate your needs.

Spencer0220 · 14/12/2023 05:25

Not a problem to redirect phones. I know someone who did this in the nhs.

Also ask about extension to your lunch break so that you don't have to eat at your desk. Another reasonable adjustment

This. Its incredibly easy to port a phone number to a different socket. This is a reasonable adjustment.
