Echo dot/radiation exposure for kids

Stormy900 · 12/12/2023 19:33

AIBU to be worried about this?
10 year old and 12 year d DC would both love one for Christmas, for their bedrooms.
They want it for music, asking questions, audible stories, etc.
If they were radiation free I'd get them without hesitation.
But I'm honestly genuinely worried about increasing their exposure to radiation when using these on top of already being exposed to high levels from our Internet WiFi.
I read online that an echo dot should be used several meters away from the child at all times to minimise risks from radiation exposure, but the distance given on the echo dot small print safety info is bigger than the size of our house, let along the size of their rooms!
Yet everyone I know seems to have one and noone seems to care about the radiation.
So AIBU???
Any experts on this out there?

There’s far more EMF around than you’d be able to make with 1000 Echo Dots - but that doesn’t matter, as even sitting in the middle of all those Echoes you’d still be fine.

It’s a complete non-issue.
I’m not an expert, but I am qualified in physics and biology to a fairly high level.

FrankieStein403 · 12/12/2023 19:55

The echo dot is using your WiFi - as presumably are your mobiles.

The highest rf transmission is actually coming from your WiFi router and is saturating your house.

Either get tinfoil hats for the kids or an education.

I'd personally be more concerned that Amazon record everything and store what's recorded over radiation. These days the radiation levels are low in our devices, but the snooping capacity is more a concern. I wouldn't personally have an any kind of Alexa or Google home player in any bedroom.

TeenDivided · 12/12/2023 19:59

My DB knows far more about this stuff than I do, has written textbooks on 3G, 4G and 5G. he says not to worry, so I don't.

Lots of snidey comments here directed at a worried parent. Lovely.

And a snidey comment aimed at everyone else? Do you have a more constructive comment?

OP, there's more radiation from the sun. Don't believe everything you read.

But why?
I mean, what on earth are they going to be interested in, in normal domestic scenarios?
Why would anyone be interested in gathering information on my DD talking to her dolls or dancing around her room, or in me asking my DS what he fancies for dinner?
I literally have zero concerns re being spied on. We don't do anything worth spying on!

If this is true, I'm doomed. I have 2 dots in my bedroom. 1 is used specifically as an audible clock, the other (directly behind my head) is used for reading my books. I also have 1 in my kitchen and my son has 1 in his bedroom.
And the router is in my bedroom.
Doooooomed!

Now you're exactly the type of person I was hoping to receive a reply from. Someone educated in this field.
Do you have any further advice or information you could share?

Much as I'd love to have such an interesting life that they'd want to know all about it, you can turn off those features or delete history. Google know a hell of a lot more about you. Including, almost certainly, what you just posted!

Well, it was constructive as the snidey comments have ceased somewhat.

Hope you feel reassured OP. 🙂

OhmygodDont · 12/12/2023 20:14

With regards to the recording wasn’t there an echo show or dot used is a criminal abuse/murder case to help them find the guilty party.

Also been known to catch out cheating partner if you actually check the recordings ever as some women found the ow’s voice asking for music 😬🫣

AllIsWellish · 12/12/2023 20:15

We have them in every room. Actually they probably get double radiation as they all have fire sticks as well

As pp have said its not something to worry about

ballsdeep · 12/12/2023 20:16

Stormy900 · 12/12/2023 19:45

I'm the reverse.
I don't actually care about privacy issues.
We're a very boring family!😂I can't see anyone or anything wanting to spy on us!

Maybe you need a bit of excitement to stop you worrying about these things!!!!

countvoncount · 12/12/2023 20:20

Between the smart devices to keep them quiet and the amount of microwave meals they eat, my kids probably glow in the dark

DdraigGoch · 12/12/2023 20:22

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/12/2023 19:44

Bubble wrap the kids

Better to wrap them in lead. So long as they don't lick it.

OP, I would recommend that you never visit Aberdeen or Cornwall.

Cerealkiller4U · 12/12/2023 20:32

It’s the same with your router…

my husband works in cyber security and he would definitely advise against one!

Data has surpassed oil in value

thats why….

Alicesmagicmushroom · 12/12/2023 20:36

Weep @WineIsMyCarb and all the rest, almost couldn’t get past the title.

Sorry OP - I used to have things attached to my phone in the 90s, and I have a family member who sent me some sort of faraday net type thing to throw over the bed posts, after the Wi-Fi has been disconnected of course. The net would supposedly filter out the last remaining nano EMFs.

@bobotothegogo hopefully OPs realises her fears are unfounded, nobody of being deliberately nasty.

Justfinking · 12/12/2023 20:36

Not sure why you're getting such a hard time OP. Given the increases in so many issues like allergies, SEN etc jsut in the past 20 or 30 years, it's certainly worth asking the question. Children are exposed to so much more plastics, processed food, technology etc I'm sure all of this does have a cumulative effect.

And privacy, everyone, even (or especially) children are allowed to not have every minute of every day recorded or listened in on.

Gen alpha and much of gen z have spent their lives being observed and monitored by data collecting bodies and having their lives and personal data gifted to corporations for free by parents and relatives due to our obsession with smart phones and technology.

I miss privacy and want to protect whatever I can of my children's privacy. It worries me when others give it away so freely.

skyfalldown · 12/12/2023 20:42

I hope you're keeping them away from bananas as well
