To ask about electric under blankets

2023forme · 06/12/2023 12:34

AIBU to ask for feedback on electric under blankets (the ones that go on the mattress) -DH and I in different camps. He wants one, I’m not convinced.

my biggest concern is where the Connector sits - DD has one and there is a bulky connector part which you couldn’t possibly lie on. She’s in a double bed on her own so she just positions it at the other side away from her.

DH thinks this is a tiny issue and “we’ll be fine”.

So those of you who have them - any words of wisdom regarding the best ones to buy/avoid?

YABU; electric blankets are fantastic and I wouldn’t be without mine
YANBU: electric blankets are a good idea but their design makes them too hard to sleep on

Two single ones. On on each side.

Also two double duvets on the bed. One each.

Ace56 · 06/12/2023 16:39

I’ve got one and love it! The connector is right at the bottom corner of the bed so I can’t feel it at all. I put it on for about 15 mins before I get into bed and it warms me up for hours! Obviously don’t leave it on overnight.

@MapleSyrupWaffles we use Tapo smart plugs, we schedule it to come on each might but if it needs more or we’ve missed our usual bedtime, the Tapo app lets us set a timer so it will turn off in 5/10 mins or however long.

We had an Amazon smart plug but there was no timer function.

Thanks. I wonder if any smart plug would work with that app, or if it has to be their specific ones. It's annoying to already have the smart plug, but somehow no way to control it!

tennesseewhiskey1 · 06/12/2023 14:46

It’s honestly the best thing since sliced bread…..

Seconded.

I got a cheap Silentnight one from Asda - 3 settings, no timer. It has worked perfectly for 5 years so far, and getting into a toasty warm bed is my favourite thing in cold weather. It's like a warm bath you don't have to get out of.

cansu · 06/12/2023 18:24

They are heavenly. I love it. The controls are on the side. Mine has a timer so you can put it on and set it to turn off after an hour or after five hours. It is lovely after a long hard day.

ThinWomansBrain · 06/12/2023 18:26

Just bought one (Silentnight, on special offer at Argos)

Hadn't had one for years, but seems v cold this winter.
Love it.
as others have said, the controls aren't really in the bit you'd be sleeping it on.
I didn't get that one, but there was one with dual control option for not a lot more, same brand.

can you borrow your daughters and try it out if you're unsure?

SlipperyLizard · 06/12/2023 18:27

@MapleSyrupWaffles i think it would need to be a Tapo smart plug I’m afraid. We tried asking Alexa to turn the bed off in 10 mins, but it didn’t work and we couldn’t find any way to do it so we didn’t end up boiling later on!

Perfectlystill · 06/12/2023 18:40

Get an expensive one (eg from Lakeland). We have lots of expensive ones that all work really well and one cheap one from Lidl that didn't last one winter. It just stopped working.

firstcomeshappiness · 06/12/2023 18:46

Have the Dreamland one that has been linked above. Best investment ever for our bed. Turn it on just 10 mins before I get into bed, down to 1 once I’m in and I keep timer for an hour. DH likes to turn his side on very early morning

Couldnt recommend it enough

Fedupwitheveryone · 06/12/2023 19:05

i loooove mine. put it on max whilst brushing teeth for 10 mins before bed and heats up quickly. i switch it off entirely before i fall asleep. the bedding traps the warmth and i swear the bed is still warmer when i wake up in the morning. superking silentnight from Amazon.

in truth i do find the connector semi annoying (it's fixed so can only be either under pillow at one end or around knee/calf height if you flip it other way) I have it positioned at the lower end and i can feel it with my feet but it's never uncomfortable. Cant flip it the other way as control wouldn't be easy enough to access.

They come up a little small OP so buy the proper size you need - eg if you tried to use a double blanket on a kingsize bed the connnector would be positioned problematically and one of you would be bothered by it.

got a small discount on black friday but they don't ever get that cheap i don't think. If mine broke I would buy a replacement tmrw. it's that good

As above, I can’t wait to get into bed

Clevs · 06/12/2023 19:41

Wouldn't be without our electric blanket because our house is cold and it's lovely to get into a warm bed. When I work nightshifts in the winter I also leave it in the lowest setting when I'm in bed in the daytime.

The connector is at the foot end and it's never been a problem there.

sep135 · 06/12/2023 19:45

Another vote for Dreamland, I haven't found an equivalent that gets hot enough. Don't get the beige furry version though as mine (and everyone else's judging by the Amazon reviews) creases and has to be adjusted every bloody night.

Controller is under my pillow so not an issue.

PanettonePuff · 06/12/2023 19:49

Ooh I love mine with a passion! Always had one as a child as we lived in a big cold house, so it was ‘cold room, warm bed’
Ive got a single Dreamland one in a Kingsize bed and have to be prized out of it!😄
I don’t find the control an issue, as there’s plenty of room in the bed, even with the German shepherd lying on it😪
Its so comforting if you’re poorly , aching or just need a warm space.

I replace mine every 2 years as I worry about fire… but that’s just me being odd! Not expensive and worth every penny!

I bought one in the black Friday sale. I can not tell you how much I love it, and how much joy I feel, getting into bed at the moment. Other than my cat, it's the best £20 I have ever spent.

Missingmyusername · 06/12/2023 19:58

Love ours. Dual control not sure on make as DH got it.
We only put it on 20 mins before bed, maybe 30.
Read someone puts theirs on 3 hours?! Good grief!
DM keeps hers on all night.

whenwhenwhen · 07/12/2023 14:09

Best. Things. Ever.

Another recommendation for Dreamland here. We've had the ones from Silentnight but they fail easily and the connectors are bulky. The Dreamland ones get much warmer, they last longer, the connectors and less bulky and better positioned, and the controllers are more reliable.

The feeling of total warmth, when you get into a pre-warmed bed on a cold night, is indescribably delicious. Get the dual version so both people can choose the temperature that suits them best.

Anycrispsleft · 07/12/2023 14:43

Just don't leave it on the preheat setting and then get into bed drunk and forget to turn it down... you'll wake up feeling like a bloody raisin! Don't ask me how I know.

CornishGem1975 · 07/12/2023 14:51

I have one and I love it as it just takes the edge off cold sheets but yeah, the hard connector bit even though it's on the edge does piss me off.

randomchap · 07/12/2023 14:56

You can get them which fit like a fitted sheet, rather than using string threaded under the mattress, these are so much easier.

There are ones with different zones too, mine has upper and lower body, so if I've got cold feet I can have the lower half warmer than the top.

I can't remember the make though, sorry

Wellhellooooodear · 07/12/2023 14:58

DC both have them in their single beds with no issues. I'd love one but DH thinks he'll be too hot.

coffeetofunction · 07/12/2023 15:06

I bought the silent night ones for each bed in summer and they are one of my best impulse purchases. The teens use them whenever they are in bed, the 9yo loves getting in a warm bed and rarely gets out of bed now once tucked in. I got back into bed today with mine on full instead of putting the heating on

StrawberriesSW1 · 07/12/2023 15:15

I've had this for 12 years, the older version where the control click is blue.
I wash in at the launderette. Best purchase ever.

I have the dreamland one too. My favourite thing is using the smartplug to turn it on while on my way home from a night out so I get into a lovely warm bed.
