To think manifestation is generally a load of tosh?

I said to my friend that I felt as if I could sleep for a week and she replied ‘don’t manifest that!’

I was a bit puzzled and asked her what she meant and she is a strong believer in jinxing things, ie if you say something is going to happen or talk about something bad happening to someone else then that thing will come round to you at some point. Same goes the other way for positive things apparently.

I like to think life is a bit more random than that and that there’s surely no such thing as jinxing something or bringing something into your clutches through talking about it, thinking about it or wishing for it. We’d all wish for a lottery win and be successful wouldn’t we. Sure if you plug away at a new qualification you might be successful when you apply for a promotion, but that’s not manifestation it’s cause and effect.

Aibu?!

It's part of the myth

You can do / be anything you want to be if you try hard enough and believe it enough

If you fail it's your fault for not believing enough - nothing to do with your ability or your opportunity- just your own fault

Doggymummar · 04/12/2023 21:42

It's bollox

Not at all - I focus and vision what I want in life and keep going and it all seems to slot into place.

For instance: I’ve always wanted to live by the beach - I kept working with that and it’s all slotted into place, I’ve just bought a dream renovation project in a period house over looking the beach!

I’ll see something I like, say, a new biker jacket and will keep thinking of it in my life and soon enough one will turn up, like my sister puts one out etc.

I do it a lot. Just focus of key things I’d like to happen and they happen a fair amount! To the point people always say how lucky I am, and I always get given loads of things! 😬

Yes, it’s bollocks.

Obviously, being positive, driven, and proactive will help you to get what you want. But just imagining it won’t.

I think being clear about what you want and focusing on that makes it more likely you’ll take steps to make it happen. It’s not cosmic woo woo, it’s psychology

flowerchild2000 · 04/12/2023 21:47

The reality is that your thought patterns help dictate your actions and decisions, etc. Manifesting is just opening your mind to opportunities but you have to act on them. So you can't manifest sleeping for a week unless you do something, not just thinking it...I think most people who use the word are either living in la la land, or want to appear more mystical than they really are, big eye roll..

Circularargument · 04/12/2023 21:48

Used to be called wishful thinking. Didn't work then either.

Beamur · 04/12/2023 21:50

Manifestation is bobbins.

HerRoyalNotness · 04/12/2023 21:50

It think YABU. The past two weeks I’ve put on in the universe to send us more resources in a club we run and to win the lotto to help us fund it. I did it twice and presto we received more resources AND won on the lotto.

I’m handing over the $4 to the club treasurer. I think I need to set my manifestations higher and more specific 😜

I've always wanted a 1982 Aston Martin Vantage. I can't afford the 6 figures needed. Any advice?

fishfingersandchipsagain · 04/12/2023 22:04

I don’t think it’s woo, I think it’s to do with pattern spotting, habit and behaviour.

If you’ve always wanted a house by the beach and you think about it often then you’re more open to other ways to make it happen (eg a big renovation project). This is different to the person who, once in a blue moon, thinks “yeah well of course I would have loved a dream beach house but it was never going to happen”.

DPotter · 04/12/2023 22:07

There's a mega difference between wishful thinking (ie manifestation) and having goals, being focused and working towards them.

To me manifestation is like when you get a new red car and all you see are red cars everywhere. You've been thinking about something so you are more aware of when that something happens along.

Even if you do believe in manifestation, it certainly isn't when you make an off the cuff remark and it comes true
