To think this timescale is ridiculous.

Im in NZ and I bought something (pretty small and couple hundred grams, think mug size but much lighter) for my small business from a store in Texas. They make them to order so they say they will aim to ship within 2 -4 days.

I get shipping notification in 2 days which is pretty fast for something made to order. About a week later I check the tracking and it hasn't even left the US yet. In fact the parcel has ping ponged between DHL locations in Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.

So it leaves Texas, goes to Ohio and sits there for 4 days before being sent to Kentucky, sits for two more days before it gets sent to Illinois where it sits for two days in a distribution centre then gets sent to another location in Illinois where there is no update for a week. None of these is getting the parcel closer to NZ in fact it's going further.

So at this point we are at two weeks and it hasn't even left the US yet! Days later the update is its departed the US. 18 days since it was despatched.

It arrives in Nz, clears customs and its delivered to me in a rural area by a man on a scooter 2 days later.

AIBU in thinking that 21 days to receive a small parcel from the US is bloody ridiculous especially the 18 days on a fruitless journey around 4 states. What the hell was it doing for 18 days?!

It was getting to the right place to get on a plane. They probably have to bundle them all together to fill up a slot on the next plane to NZ.

I don't think the size is particularly relevant tbh (unless we're talking about something humongous)

I've given up understanding how shipping works. I ordered shoes on Thursday. They started in Youngstown, Ohio. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. On Friday, they arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is 5.5 hours east of Youngstown. Cincinnati is 4 hours west of Youngstown. 🤷‍♀️

I am also in SH and if I order from Amazon US is takes a minimum of 15 to 21 days. It always goes to various hubs in the US first.

So this is not usual.

*unusual

it was queueing to get through customs. That can take an unlimited amount of time

I don't understand the courier services in the US but my orders also seem to take a lot longer that expected.

For orders placed for delivery within the US this has definitely been my experience.
Even Amazon Prime- too often it's been really disappointing.
For orders placed for deliveries to the UK this has also been my experience and the US part of the journey seems to take forever.

I have resorted to imagining a delivery truck driving slowly for hundreds and hundreds of miles on empty highways with the driver listening to country music and stopping for a break at every single gas station. No satnav. It's all complete with an American accent in my head. And now I just accept this is the way it is.
