To ask for success stories on getting rid of mice

Having discovered mice droppings in an airing cupboard (underneath last years Christmas decorations) I now can't stop thinking about them running all over my house & haven't been able to eat or sleep properly. This surprises me as I'm usually pretty good at dealing with things but it's really had an effect on me mentally. I have pest control coming today but keep hearing horror stories of people unable to get rid of mice. I haven't seen any, and since blocking off holes to that cupboard haven't found any more droppings anywhere but I'm aware they could be under my kitchen units etc. Nothing in the kitchen was nibbled etc at all so could it be one cold field mouse that I've now managed to get rid of? I want to move out I'm feeling that awful about it all.

Where does one find a mouse proofer? This is exactly what I want someone who will find and seal all of the gaps! (All the better if they have a dog to help with scents) But pest control company said they don't do this but will show me the holes which will be good for once the mice are hopefully gone!

We put snap traps down with shortbread and lots were killed that way.

Pest control came out and put poison down and filled any holes that were there. Never had them since.

The noise of the trap that night will never leave me. We killed 10 and there was only a few droppings but there was more. They breed every 21 days.

Also I don't know anyone with a cat, all dogs round here! I could borrow my sisters dog if that would have the same appeal. Ugh I'm so over this.

Pest control have been & does seem to think it was only one mouse given the lack of droppings anywhere else or things being chewed, nothing under the kickboards or anything. He has put bait down & showed me where the holes are that need to be filled so hopefully this is the end of all my problems!

Have been out to buy chocolate to bait our humane traps as advised upthread, now will have to go out and buy shortbread to try @anon2134.
