to not understand why people do this and think it's fucking stupid?

I own my own business selling products via a webpage.

Every now and then I will put on a sale, sometimes randomly, but also for things like Black Friday etc.. I always ensure that all orders have been fulfilled before doing this.

Every time I get customers contacting me acting aggrieved at the fact that an item they bought is now on sale. I understand its annoying but some of these people ordered their items literally weeks prior and will actually be pissed off that the items now on sale WEEKS after they bought it.

I do actually occasionally refund the difference to someone if its a recent order and they are polite in their request but I have people emailing weeks later and being really shitty about it.

Aibu to think this is fucking stupid? A sale has to have a start date surely it's not feasible to expect a refund for something weeks later just because it's now on sale and be annoyed about? Obviously I can't simply go back weeks and refund everyone the difference otherwise there would be no point ever having a sale.

I just don't understand why people do this.

Ask them if they'd have been willing to pay the extra if you'd put your prices up a week after their purchase.

TatoSpice · 22/11/2023 20:13

I'd probably just ignore the emails. There are chances in all walks of life.

bossybloss · 22/11/2023 20:14

Because they are CFs !

Rachaelrachael · 22/11/2023 20:15

People are stupid. I bet they wouldn't go back into their high street store and complain about it.
I also run an online store. My biggest annoyance right now is when people leave a review saying 'thought it would be bigger' when the dimensions are clearly displayed along with multiple photos..

CremeEggSupremacy · 22/11/2023 20:16

I was really disappointed recently because I booked a microblading appointment that cost £300, a week later she did a deal where it was £195 for a few days. Disappointed, yes. Did I dream of emailing to ask for the discount? Absolutely not. Obviously it's a pain if you miss out on a sale but you're not entitled to the lower price...if you've fulfilled the orders I would 100% ignore them

theduchessofspork · 22/11/2023 20:18

Because they are chancers

or expect something for nothing

Write yourself a pat paragraph that you fire off

And stop refunding people if they ask nicely. A sale is a safe, we all know if we don’t want to pay full price we can chance it and wait.

CheatingCheetos · 22/11/2023 20:20

I assume this is two types of people:

  1. Chancers, with no shame
  2. People who are as thick as mince

You are not being unreasonable.

Butsheisnot · 22/11/2023 20:26

I worked in high st retail for many years - a fairly high end brand. This happened at every sale or promotion. Some were chancers, some were genuinely aggrieved that amazingly, we had a winter and summer sale each year and we're genuinely incensed that we had somehow fleeced them by not telling them 2 months ago that we might have a sale at some point.

We used to refund the difference if people were still within their return period and encourage them to sign up to emails so a sale wouldn't surprise them again (obviously not how we worded it)

But I wouldn't expect that from a small business. I'd have a standard, polite, reply template set up and reply using that.

The general public are interesting.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/11/2023 20:27

I’ll confess it does irk me when I buy something then a few days later it’s on sale - but
A. That’s life
B. I have bigger problems.

So I get over it in about 30 seconds

megletthesecond · 22/11/2023 20:29

Because a lot of people are nuts. DS has just started working in a shop and they had a customer demanding a refund as he'd lost the item he'd bought. DS was 🤯😂

riotlady · 22/11/2023 20:30

I used to work in Past Times and once had a lady try and return an item she had bought while it was on sale, and asked for a refund of the full price! Had to explain endlessly that I could only refund the money she had actually paid, regardless of whether the item was now priced higher.

You’d be surprised. An old friend of mine used to do exactly this all the time. I remember she was going on holiday and had bought a few bikinis from Oasis, next day they were in the sale at 50% off. She took them back, got a refund and then re-bought them! I was amazed the shop let her do it.

waitholdup · 22/11/2023 20:31

Glad I agreed with you, I wanted to just from the title

OMG I LOVED Past Times! I wish it was still around

I worked in Topshop as a student. This is 20 years ago. We genuinely had a woman come in and try to return New Look jeans. We explained we can’t accept it because she didn’t buy them here and she was completely adamant she had. It was bizarre

I think that's quite common in big retailers. I bought some Lego a few weeks ago and the person on the till said it might be reduced in the upcoming sale so to keep my receipt and rebuy at the lower price, if it was reduced.

I'd never expect a small company to do it though, nor for something I'd had for.weeks! If something is reduced and I'm in my return period then I'd re-purchase and return the full price item, only in big retailers though.

hotcandle · 22/11/2023 20:35

I always email to ask whether the shop owner would consider a partial refund if I've bought something and I'm still within the returns period.

Where the shop doesn't want to offer to refund the difference I either return and repurchase or, depending on the response and whether the item was a want or need, I return for a full refund.

I get that it's very frustrating for business owners and particularly small business owners but at the end of the day I'm only concerned about my own pocket.

I received a £200 + refund a few weeks ago just by emailing and saying I would refund for a full refund otherwise.

CommonOrNot · 22/11/2023 20:37

Oooh. This has just made me think twice. I ordered a tracksuit 3 weeks ago for £300 and it has just gone into the sale for 50% off. I was going to return and re order at the discounted price and thought that would be reasonable..

EatMyHead · 22/11/2023 20:46

Hmm, let me think: Customer buys product at agreed price, takes delivery, job done.

Customer then sees a way of receiving a bunch of money they are not entitled to, by acting aggrieved about something ridiculous that is just one of those things. You give the customer the money, even though they're probably not the kind of customer you want anyway, and if they are they're just not going to respect you now and will keep trying shit on. Customer is richer; you are poorer.

Something tells me it's not the customer who is stupid. 😀

Grimfoxx · 22/11/2023 20:58

What I find annoying about sales is that it shows how massive the profit margins must be in the first place if they can afford to slash the prices hugely.

PurpleWhirple · 22/11/2023 21:04

I've done this recently. Mainly because I've been buying a lot of furniture and it pisses me off that companies take hundreds of pounds of my money and then hold it for weeks before dispatching the product. Twice recently this has happened and in the interim the product has gone into the sale (before I've received it). Both times I've asked for the discount and been refunded the difference.

I really don't think that's cheeky

Titsywoo · 22/11/2023 21:09

I run an online store and although most customers are lovely there are also several incredibly rude, stupid and pisstaking people out there. Just ignore.

I used to work on customer services in Sainsbury’s and the number of people trying to return stuff branded from Asda or Tesco was incredible. Also people trying to return stuff that was out of date when their receipt showed they had bought it when it was well in date. You leaving it to go out of date in your fridge is not my problem! 😩😩😩

BillionaireTea · 22/11/2023 21:18

@PurpleWhirple I think that's fine- because you haven't even received the thing yet. Other people who were happy to buy it and take it home to use and then return it - have a word with yourselves! You were happy to buy it in the first place!
