To be worried sick about rising energy prices

I just received this email from British Gas. How much more can we take? I'm lost for words.

To be worried sick about rising energy prices

The rise is estimated to be about £100 a year, due to Israel/Hamas war raising wholesale prices. That's what I read anyway.

hiddle · 22/11/2023 16:00

Youre being a tad dramatic, the rises aren't that big and if you're that worried why haven't you fixed? I fixed with BG back in September, although I re-fixed again in October when a cheaper tariff came out (you can change tariff with BG without penalty if you're staying with them) I have kept an eye on the tariffs and they've started increasing now (although not by very much at all). You do pay a bit more than standard variable (at the time at least, I think mine will be slightly less than the projected Jan standard variable) but you have piece of mind knowing what you're paying for a year.

If you're that worried I suggest you spend a little time reading up on it so you can take action.

Tinkerbyebye · 22/11/2023 16:20

Oh get away with you. They said months ago it would go down a bit from 1st October then rise January, so in effect you are back to more or less paying what you did from 1st July

prices are reviewed quarterly

anon2134 · 22/11/2023 16:28

I can't decide if I should fix or not

CeeJay81 · 22/11/2023 16:31

I wouldn't fix, as aren't prices going to come down second half of next year?

scarcitymindset · 22/11/2023 16:32

It’s just another thing after another

Eleganz · 22/11/2023 16:43

OP, I have received the same email from British Gas and other than the statement that prices are rising there is no other detail about the price rise. The rest of the email is about how you can get help with the costs. So I don't blame you for being worried as they have given you very little information.

British Gas's communication is utterly shit. What they should be telling you is how the costs are changing and what that may mean for you at the very least. This is a huge problem for the energy industry as they seem convinced that we little members of the public are incapable of understanding unit pricing so we just deserve to be give no information or illustrative figures that don't apply to our usage levels.

TheSingingDefective · 22/11/2023 16:51

Martin Lewis reckons prices will rise by no more than 5% so not exactly a huge increase.

Beezknees · 22/11/2023 16:55

They're not going up hugely, it's a very small increase (I work in this sector) and we had a slight drop in October so the prices will be similar to what they were in the summer.
