Anyone else found sitting on video calls all day long for work has made them self conscious?

I used to be office based but since Covid am 100% remote. Whilst I love the flexibility for childcare pick up / drop off I am starting to worry about my sanity!

I have to turn my video on all day and just feel depressed and miserable looking at my face and hearing my voice constantly. I look so ugly and sound like I have a lisp? It’s made me so self conscious and it’s now making real life interactions more anxious. Anyone else? Any advice?

Yes I know what you mean. There’s something terribly unnerving about staring at oneself on a screen seeing all your quirks and flaws. To be honest I just turn my camera off sometimes as I can’t bear looking at myself.

Are you in meetings? I turn hide my self view. Otherwise I just look at myself.

Why are you looking at yourself while you are having a meeting with other people? And how is talking on camera different to talking in real life in terms of you having a lisp?

Hide self view - you don't have to look at yourself. I find it distracting, and it's not healthy or natural for us to be looking at ourselves so much.

It's grim isn't it. I wouldn't care when I meet people face to face when I look a bit haggard it's not even vaguely the point of my job but I don't have to watch myself in a mirror.
I just pull up a different screen so I can't see it.

Massively. I've had to have my eyebrows micro bladed as a result as I kept thinking they were hugely uneven. They weren't that bad but I became obsessed with them. Now I've suddenly started to be incredibly self conscious about the gap in my teeth which I've always had and previously quite liked.

My hairdresser was telling me that there has been a big increase in the number of root touch ups since covid. Also that the rate of botox, fillers, other tweakments has increased, partially due to people being on video much more.
I would agree with her, I get roots done more often and even had botox as I was looking so haggard on calls!

Yep. The soft focus setting in Teams helps slightly…

Yes, I hate it. I'm the oldest in my workplace now and boy do I feel it when on screen! I have tried hiding self view, but then worry I'll forget I'm on screen!

I do some online tutoring. All my students are young and beautiful (unlike me!)

I bought a ring light and always wear makeup. I use the low res camera on my laptop rather than my 4K document camera because that makes things worse.
