This posted on a local Facebook page. Asking people to bump to find owner?

Why do you think it's a scam?

You aren’t making any sense op

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/11/2023 14:58

Not sure why you think it's a scam.

I don't think I know. It's from a fake profile. Plus it's just obvious it's not our area.

I have wondered the same. Had at least 3 this week and they're all fake. Why do it?

Hellocatshome · 11/11/2023 15:00

They remove the ability to comment on the post but ask people to share. After lots of people have shared they edit the post into an advert instead of the original post.

JumpingDizzy · 11/11/2023 15:00

These fake posts are put on Facebook. They make out dogs are found and want people to bump share etc. Fake profile. What I don't understand is why? What do they get out of it? I'll be amazed if no one on MN has come across this?

There are lots of these scams.
Usually a picture of a sad face dog and crucially comments are turned off. I saw the same photo of the same dog on three different local FB pages, allegedly found in three different places. Like this one. I started taking screen shots after the third one!

We've had the same one crop up locally here too. Some of my friends shared it and the next day it was edited to something else. Odd indeed!

Not odd a way of getting your advert etc shared by lots of people. Usually a lost/injured dog or a lost child/elderly person. Usually easy to spot by their use of Americanisms and the comment feature turned off.

In fact I've just been to see what it changed to and it's changed again to this

I've seen the one in the OP, shared in Bray in Ireland. I have no idea what they get from it. Maybe people send DMs? Or maybe they keep an eye on the people who share it, and target them later. EG a lady I know shared it, trusting it was real. Maybe the poster would target her later for money or something?

margotrose · 11/11/2023 15:14

Once they get thousands of shares, they edit the post to some ad or scam.

Very, very common.

Ah! I hadn't noticed that. Thanks!

These are constantly in my feeds I always report them. I don't know what you would get out of such a scam , maybe people's info

IrritableVowel · 11/11/2023 15:19

I just looked at the one my mate shared and it was removed by the page, so her post just shows a link to the page now.

Cheers for the explanation. The ones I see are jumped on fast. So I never see it change.
