Wtf just happened to me as I was falling back to sleep

I woke up really thirsty. Had a bit of water and laid back down. I couldn’t sleep for a while. Eventually started to drift off and I sort of felt myself go into some kind on panic attack. I felt my hands clench together, my heart racing, a loud sort of whirring electrical noise in my head and I felt all stiff. It stopped and then happened again 3 times. I woke back up and felt all hot. I was sort of in the stage of being half awake, half asleep. Can’t get back to sleep now

That sounds terrifying!

Do you feel relatively normal now?

Lulu9719 · 11/11/2023 01:51

I’m wondering if it was some sort of sleep paralysis I feel completely fine now but wide awake! It honestly felt like something bad was happening to me

Sleep paralysis!

It comes in many forms.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this, it is genuinely scary, but you are not in danger, and can't be hurt!

I hope you manage some sleep!

EBearhug · 11/11/2023 02:05

It's an incubus or succubus (can never remember which way round they are.)

It's not, but it's how tales of them arose - sleep paralysis. It's one of the stages of sleep. It's normal, but usually you... sleep through it, so aren't aware.

Yeah sounds like sleep paralysis. Were you on your back? Did it feel like you were buzzing/vibrating kind of thing?

LastNightIDreamtIWasAtManderleyAgain · 11/11/2023 03:09

Please check with GP in case it's epilepsy

Simonlebonbon · 11/11/2023 04:18

100% SP.

I have had it since 17 and often a few times a night.
PP who said it takes many forms is right.
I think I've experienced each one.
It's very scary at first, I hope you're alright.

Vegetus · 11/11/2023 04:26

Sleep paralysis, I get it when I'm very stressed. First time was terrifying now I recognise what's happening and just ride the storm out as it were.

Nonplusultra · 11/11/2023 05:42

Sounds like a hypnogogic hallucination. The state between sleep and wakefulness can be very weird.

Lochness1975 · 11/11/2023 05:55

Sleep paralysis- bloody horrible!

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 11/11/2023 06:47

Sleep paralysis - associated with stress, sleep deprivation, erratic sleep schedule, alcohol use, and physical fatigue. Horrible but harmless.

Sheraprincessofflower · 11/11/2023 06:50

Like everyone has said so far, it’s sleep paralysis. I always get the racing heart and weird buzzing/whirring noise in my head with it. It’s very unpleasant.

Westillaremadeofgreed · 11/11/2023 07:15

Sleep paralysis is honestly terrifying. I'd never experienced it until a few years ago when I got a weighted blanket. When it happened twice in a month I got rid of the blanket and I've not had one since.

I usually love scary films, theme parks, anything that gives a good adrenaline hit.
But this was something else.
I woke up and felt the weight of someone/thing sitting on the end of the bed (I lived alone).
I tried to sit up to see what it was, but I couldn't move, I couldn't shout, I couldn't even turn my head. I then heard and felt the springs move again after about 30/60 seconds, but felt like hours, and I slowly started being able to move again.

Oddsoc · 11/11/2023 07:43

Could it be hypnic jerks? Meant to happening just as you are falling off to sleep

inapickle2300 · 11/11/2023 07:44

Non epileptic attack disorder, NEADS? It sounds very similar to my experience of it an If I can remember correctly, I had my first episode in the middle of the night. Are you feeling stressed or anxious about anything?

Catsafterme · 11/11/2023 08:21

I have recently been diagnosed with a neuro disorder and suffered with what sounds similar to this for years. I was told by neuro it is a type of seizure.

Racing heart, hot flush, tense with an internal vibration feeling (sometimes visible shaking) and neither asleep or awake an in-between state.
