To ask if you'd go to minor injuries with this foot injury?

I was outside my house and my ankle rolled out which meant I fell onto my foot at a weird angle. There was no popping or snapping sound, but it hurt a lot and made me go really dizzy and light headed like I was going to faint, so I had to lie on the pavement for around 5-10 minutes waiting for the dizziness to pass.

The outer top of my foot swelled up slightly, but I could bear weight on it. This morning I can bear weight on it, but it hurts when lifting my foot off the floor to take a step. It's better when I have my shoes on, as it's compressing my foot and holding everything 'together' whilst I take a step (if that makes sense). It's when I move my toes is when it hurts (although I can move them).

I'm young and otherwise healthy. I'm not sure whether to go to minor injuries or not, the main concern I have is the level of pain I felt when I hurt it (I've only ever gone faint from pain intensity before and that's when I broke a bone).

Absolutely . Get it checked

Toooldtoworry · 08/11/2023 07:30

I've been sent to minor injuries by my GP twice for a similar injury. They refused to xray and 6 months later I'm still in pain. Booked in again to my GP to get it checked.

Personally I'd still try your minor injuries because they might be more reasonable than mine.

Yes of course, you have a minor injury, it’s exactly what it’s there for!
better to get it checked than have it heal weirdly and bother you for years

My daughter had a similar injury. With the swelling and bump on her foot but was able to weight bear and wiggle her toes etc.

She moaned about it for 4 days (and may have even played a game of hockey) until I reluctantly took her to the doctor. She had a broken bone in her foot...

In short, definitely get it checked out...

Yup, you need an xray today. If you have done some damage it is critical to know, so that you don't do further damage.

I broke my foot in the same way as a child. Swelling sounds similar too. I managed to walk on a school trip the next day. Took a month for my mum to take me to the doctor (so don’t feel bad about 4 days @Do88byisfree )

Also I have a child with a knack for breaking bones. I can tell if it’s broken by his reaction - pale, shaking etc - more relevant than the force of the fall or apparent swelling/bruising.

So yes, minor injuries.

I agree with the reaction being more indicative of damage than the pain. The fact you went dizzy after the injury would suggest a break. Get it checked.

Thank you all, I’ll definitely get it checked out today

Just thought I'd give an update if anyone's interested (lol). I went to minor injuries and they said I have likely fractured the 5th metacarpal so I have an appointment to get an x-ray on it tomorrow

I’ve woken up this morning and it’s feeling a lot better so I’m not sure if I still need an X-ray? The swelling has gone done a lot, and I can walk on it a lot easier

If the break is likely, get it x-rayed for confirmation. That way you'll get the correct after-treatment so that it repairs properly. If it is left you could have problems with it in years to come, especially when you are old.

My friend had an ankle fracture and explained ro me that they can be very hars to diagnose - and treat! Because of the way the ankle holds the bones together.

She had a physical job so had lot of trouble with it. Good luck hope yours heals soon
